This is because it is possible that there are other people who have the same username, but the numbers are used to distinguish between each individual. For most players that has the username followed by the number 1 (with the Webkinz staff as an exception), you can send a friend request by typing in their username (with spaces) and adding the number 0 or 1 in the little box next to where you typed their username. Typing 0 or 1 at the end will still send a request to the same person. For anyone that has the number 2 or higher, typing in the username (with spaces) and then typing in the number in the little box next to it will send a friend request to that person.
