The flare is simply a locator. If it highlights something in yellow you then have to go back and fire on those spots.

If you hit a ship with the flare it shows the length of the ship.

The flare is a special one square power up that will hit that space with a cannonball if anything is there, and create a line of highlighted spaces showing where the rest of that ship is. If it doesn’t hit anything, it will just mark off that square with an X.
