For baby pets, every time you interact with them, it gives them a growth moment which will eventually be converted to a growth point. But for kid pets, if you feed them, have them exercise, and bring them to the arcade at different points in time, you can technically fill their hearts every day without adding a single growth moment on that pet. If there is a mission that asks to send a baby or kid pet to daycare, you would probably be more likely to have an option available after the update than what is available right now.
