Most maple trees are on hills, and you tap them when there's snow on the ground. It's not as simple as drilling a hole though, because most people use plastic tubing to run all of the sap into one BIG bucket. If any of the tubes are broken you have to fix them, in two feet of snow. And it's not so easy to carry a backpack with a drill, drill bits, the contraption to fix lines, taps, plastic tubing, and many other things up a hill with lots of snow. My family taps a sugarbush every spring and we boil it to make syrup, candy, and cream, so we know what it takes to make great syrup, and it does take a lot of hard work! Tapping trees is NOT easy. It was sooo fun! We had maple popcorn, maple fudge, maple syrup, maple tofee and maple lolipops. We went to make little bird feeders out of Fruit Loops, Cheerios, Cranberes, Rasins, and mangoes. Then we decarated bags and wrote our names on them. We even went on a horse drawn wagon ride! We went to a sugarbush today! It was sooo fun!
