The pets that are being retired have already been retired long ago – we are simply just notifying the players which ones have already stopped being manufactured.

This is not a very exciting retirement prize. I already have 39 academy choir robes from sending a 1KC letter to Ms. Cowoline every day. Why not give away a sailboat game prize, that game is impossible to win anyway.
