Hey ‘Kinz friends,

Have you ever had to speak in public? Like…in front of an audience? If you have, maybe you know how I feel right now: nervous. SO NERVOUS.

I’m kind of freaking out.

I’ve got to do a book report in front of my class. I’ve read the book and I’ve written the speech – and my mom said it sounded really good (I’m not too scared to read it to her). I just don’t know what I’m going to do when it’s my turn to talk. I’m so afraid I’ll panic!

What do you do when you’re nervous, friends? I need some good advice!

When i speak for speech team i speak REALLY fast because that is what i do when i get nervous. Speah team is REALLY helpful. :)

otherwise, just be your self and look at everybody’s forehead. It makes it LOOK like your looking at them, though you really are not ♫

OMG, I totally know how you feel! I’m 13 and I still cry whenever I have to present something fairly big. It’s my biggest phobia next to the dentist… UGH!!

    Keep up the good work!

Hey! don’t worry, it’s not that bad! when i had to do a speech for my 4-h club, i was terrified. i really wanted to chicken out! but once i was about to the middle, i got more confortable. you need to try to “look” at the audience, like teachers say, but what helped me, was look in the middle, at something, not a person. try to make it look like your making eye contact with them, but don’t. then you’re just talking to the floor, or whatever you’re looking at. :) Hope this helps. Good luck!

Why? Well cuz tomorrow im going to try musical theater and lyrical! Musical theater is singing and lyrical is kind of like jazzy ballet! i wish you luck Alex! wish me luck!

Yeah, I have stage fright, too. I think I’m getting better with it now, but singing in front of people still leaves me shaking in my boots. I was in a skit with some of my friends not TOO long ago, and I was on edge, watching for my cue. I thought for sure I’d mess up, but I just kept telling myself “You can do it!” and repeating my lines in my head. Actually, once I was on the stage, I didn’t feel as nervous. It was actually fun! I’d like to be in a real play sometime, with props and costumes and stuff. Maybe if I can get on stage more I won’t be so nervous. Just keep telling yourself that you’ll do fine, and march right up there and do it! You can do it, Alex!

I think you should imagine everyone as tiny mice, and it might not seem like such a big crowd. ;) Okay, bad pun. But DO NOT imagine them in their underwear, that would be scarier. P.S. I’ve NEVER done a speech, bud endured a dance recital with the tiny mice trick.
**Everyone else has good tips too**

I talk to my friends who have already done theirs hoping that they will give you advice. If you’re first then you think that all your friends are in the audience and if you mess up it’s no biggie just pretend that it never happend at all just go on and keep talking.
    hope that helped,

I LOVE acting and singing, and I know that (from experience) even people who love the spotlight get nervous. Once we start preforming, we feel FINE! Just present your book report when your comfortable. Get some more practice too! I hope I can help.

At last year’s talent show, I got so nervous! Once I started singing, I wasn’t nervous anymore! Also, imagine you are talking to a friend. (but don’t say, “Hey Nibbles the book…”) Use good jokes too. Once something funny happens, that should take the pressure off you. I was in a spelling bee last year, and a kid knocked over the microphone, and everyone felt alot better!

The thing that helps me the most when I have to talk to a group of people is picking out one person in the group, especially if its someone i know well or is a friend (thats best) – and just talk to them like we were sitting around having a conversation. Imagine your speaking just to that person and its not so hard. that’s what works 4 me.

Don’t think of the people just concentrate, and do your best! ;-)

I had to give an essay in front of all the people in my town for memorial day, and I was pretty nevous, but after I finished, the crowd clapped and I was really proud of myself!!! :) You should be too, Alex! Don’t be worried!

ya i have been in some plays it isn’t that hard and my trick is make sure you do not look at any one directly because for some reason it makes your mind go blank… i looked just over the top of peoples heads so that wouldn’t happen (that is what most people do in that theater) and is works for me you will be fine:)

when i have to perform, i usually just ignore the fact that tons of people are staring at me, and imagine that i’m at home practicing. with speaking it’s different, but you need to make eye contact frequently.

Funny! Last year in 4th drage I had to do a Tropicana Speech! I was SO NERVOUS!! But then, I practiced in front of my friends that made me know I could do it. that was only in front of my class though.

in grade 4 i was in a spelling bee. i was really nervous but my friend told me to imagine that all the audience was in their underwear! (lol) but it all worked out bcuz i didn’t have to face the audience. AND, as the youngest grade in the school i got second place!!!!!!!!! i got out on adieu. then i went to the regional one and as the very youngest there i got 8th place!!!!!!!!! in the tenth round i got out on hyperbole.

      Don’t worry Alex..
I have spoken in front of an audience millions of times. Every time I’m nervous, but I just think about the people who are listening to me. I pretend I’m hearing myself speak. This helps me to project my voice and really think about what I’m saying. Hope this helps. Also, practice in front of your family or friends. They can give comments at the end so you’ll be prepared for a bigger crowd!

    • mkingry says:

Actually, that is not a good idea. Every teacher I ever had, (I am 11) has told me to never concentrate on 1 person in the audience, but everyone.

      • vivian says:

ya they say that you have to look around but make it look like you are making eye contact but do not just look at the top of peoples heads
        *VIV*

      • Joanna says:

Umm… yeah, I thought that over, maybe concentrating on the audience is not a good idea for some, but otherwise, what I’m trying to say is, if you don’t think about what your saying, you may say it too quietly for the audience to hear.
