Plumpy: What to do when a friend moves away?

Dear Plumpy,
I’m so sad. My best friend is moving away in a month and I’m going to miss him SO much. My best friend is like my brother – he and I have been friends since we were babies (our moms are good friends). Everyone jokes and says that we could be twins – even though I’m a girl and he’s a boy. We’re just so similar! He’s moving right across the city – much too far to ride our bikes. What am I going to do without him?

Dear AL,
I’m so sorry to hear that your friend is moving. It’s a really, really hard thing to deal with. Especially if you’re as close as you and your BFF are.

Since you can’t stop him from moving, the best thing to do is to figure out how to best stay in touch – through email, snail mail, phone calls…and definitely arrange some time for you to see each other in person. Maybe you can take turns visiting each other every other weekend. Or maybe your families can get together and have dinner or go out someplace. Since your mom is good friends with his mom, they’ll probably see each other now and then – so maybe you can tag along and see your pal. Moving across the city may seem far, but the older you get, the more you’ll see people you know and love move across the province or state…across the country…and maybe even around the world! What matters is how much you care about the person, and that you stay in touch. Whether your BFF is right around the corner, or half an hour away, you and he can still be a big part of each other’s lives.

Love,

Plumpy

The same thing happened to me. (Although I was the friend that moved away) Moving is really sad, but it’s comforting to think that a long time ago, people didn’t have the same privileges as we do now. They didn’t have cell phones or e-mail. They mail took a long time to send and when some one moved away, you would probably not see them again (especially in the 1800′s) since it was very hard to travel.
I’m so glad we have e-mail now so I can keep in touch with my friends.

be strange not having him around when I go to parties or make movies. :( But there’s a 95% chance he’s moving back in two or three year. :D

No way! The exact same thing happened to me! My best friends were 4 boys who are like brothers to me, even though I’m a girl. I’ve known them since I was a baby. Our moms are good friends. Then I moved away. Wow! That’s so weird!

I have a problem with that too. I moved from Kansas all the way to North Carolina about a week ago. Were living in an apartment right now! Anyway, I had a hard time leaving my best friends and I miss them still but I still keep in contact with them. A few days ago, I sent a card to each and every one of them and I also call them every day so that I don’t feel bad.

        hi-
i remember in kindergarten, i had a really good friend. We were best friends, even though he was a boy and i’m a girl.
when i got to my school on the first day of grade one, i ran all around looking for him so we could walk in together.
        i couldn’t find him.
turns out, he was going to a different school
        but i survived.

        thanks for reading,

This is good advice. My mom is telling me to move to a new school this year, and I do NOT want
to leave my friends. I hope I can still stay at my school! Its a really good school, but my mom thinks
that there are more oportunities at the new school. ~LillyLuvie* :)

Good advice… but Plumpy, your “visit each other every other weekend” and stuff doesn’t work for one of my best friends, my next door neighbor who in 2 weeks will be moving to the other side of the world…

I think my parents r thinking of moving out to Prineville. I’ll miss my friends if we do, but I want to move at the same time because we have lived in this house for 7 yrs! But, there is one advantage to that, I also have another friend in Prineville, he said I was an awesome friend, pretty nice, huh?

    • Rice says:

That is some nice advice plumpy. I went through almost the same exact thing. Me ( a girl) and my still BFF ( a boy) like to stay in touch by phone. We see each other about 2 times a months and call each other every other day. But sadly he has not answerd my calls lataly :I . Oh well.
