Roberta’s Kitchen Makeover

Elwin and I have designed a few kitchens in our time. We redecorated Chef Gazpacho’s house, redid Fluffington’s kitchen, and even redesigned our dad’s kitchen (he was actually our first client!). The Rabbit family’s kitchen was a lot of fun to redesign. We had a really big room to work with, and the only things they requested were:

1.       A breakfast nook

2.       An island

3.       LOTS of storage

Easy, right? Here’s what we ended up with:

Hailey and I love, love, LOVE the modern look of this room. The wallpaper and flooring work just perfectly with the high-end appliances and breakfast nook. This kitchen is almost professional enough for a chef like Gazpacho!

I would have to say that I like the “idea” of this design, but the mechanics fall short. There is very little in the way of either counter space or storage. You’ve got a small 2 square island that you can USE. The other island has an appliance and candles. Now I will agree that those can be moved, but would you really want to do that every day you need the sandwich maker? Also, unless you keep all your food in the refigerator you’ll have to store it UNDER THE SINK?! Ewwww. Needs more cabinet/storage space. I agree about the couches. I can see that a quiet sitting area, but not a place to actually eat your meals. White silk is an unrealistic choice due to the spillage factor.

you know that does look like something that chef gazpocho would be in! but heres MY question. is that the first room or the room you guys decorated? PLMK

Haley, Elwin, do either of you cook? Your going to be walking miles in that kitchen. Shift all the applicances to the left to make an “L” in the cornor . Then shift the sink and cabinets. Then add more cabinets for counter space and maybe a wardword for canned goods. Then double the island, and turn it. Then move the breakfast nook front. To much wasted space. Everythings nice, you just need to reposition it. jennifer

HORRIBLE This is one of the worst makeovers you’ve done so far. I don’t like anything about it. What are silk white couches doing in a kitchen? And you have to have room space. What about an high chair for the baby?? And furthermore its just a little too plain. Sorry. To the scale 1 to 100 a complete 0. ~* Always shine from TaraStarShine~*

I so agree with you Tara it is horrible. Floor and walls are too busy together, one or the other but the worse decision is white couches in a kitche with food. They could have done so much with the space, even the distance from the table to the stove if you are cooking and feeding a baby at the same time that is a lot of walking.

Luv the room!!!!!!!!!!!!! Silk white couches though? Not the best choice. Maybe dining chairs instead? *Your friend, Orange Starburst*

White couches in a kitchen? With children? What were you thinking??? I like the rest of the kitchen, but there is way too much empty space. Where is the “lots of storage space” they specifically requested?

`Wouldn’t all those appliances be pretty expensive?

    that room has pure awesomeness!

I love the floors and walls, but in such a large room I thought there would be a bigger island and more storage, since they specifically asked for those. And I don’t know about white couches in a kitchen, especially with a new baby on the way. Seems like a stain magnet to me. But I always find your designs interesting. I can’t wait to see Roberta’s room! Robyn

Robyn – You have said everything I was going to say, but with greater elegance and simplicity. So all I can say is, I agree with you. I, too, am excited to see Roberta’s room. All the best! MDIChickadee

Personally, I don’t really think the flooring is good for a kitchen. It’s all stoney. Second, the Breakfast Nook is right in front of the Working Space. That’s not exactly functional. Third, why is there 2 random sofas next to a random table? Is that supposed to be the “island”? ~Phoenix~
