Crafty Critterz – Arctic Window

It’s chilly outside, so why not stay warm indoors and make an appropriately “cool” craft? Make your own version of the Polar Bear’s special item — the Arctic Window — with these instructions from our archive.

What you need:

  • 1 white 3×5 index card
  • White packing peanuts
  • Dark blue paint
  • Salt
  • Glue
  • Other paint colors for the Northern Lights

What you do:

  1. Paint the index card dark blue and let dry.
  2. Put a thin layer of glue on the bottom portion of the card and cover in salt. This will be the snow-covered ground.
  3. Paint the Northern Lights onto the sky.
  4. Break up the packing peanuts and glue them around the edges of the index card.
Hang your Arctic Window with some sticky tac or adhesive tape!

Do you have a great idea for a craft, recipe or party game? We’d love to hear them!

I think this window is very cute. Great job to the designer! I don’t know where to get packing peanuts anymore, though. Amazon uses bubble pillow wrap (which sounds amazing when you pop it in a room with an echo!) Maybe I can think of something else to use as a substitute. The edges kind of look like mini marshmallows, but I don’t think that would be a good idea. (I was taught not to play with my food!)

Cotton balls would probably make a reasonable substitute :)

Thank you Sally Webkinz! THAT makes much more sense! (Although, now that I’m thinking about mini marshmallows, I’ll probably go get some more cocoa!) ;-)

A strip of cotton comes in some pill bottles or aspirin and such bottles you can ask your mom for. It will cut up into squares. Or if you want the round look use cotton balls. There is also first aid cotton. comes in a roll in a box ask your mom if she has some! Unrole it and cut into the sizes you need ask mom for help. I would want stars on mine and would glue on glass crystals! Great project!!
