Field Trip #2 – Prairie Grassland

And we are off to our second field trip destination! Hello, class — welcome to the Prairie Grassland!

You can thank the advance and retreat of glaciers for the exceptionally flat prairies in North America, and the deep root systems of the native plants kept the soil from eroding, making the prairies some of the most fertile ground around!

Prairies are home to a diverse array of plants — mostly grasses — but the rich, fertile soil grows all kinds of crops, too — from grains such as wheat to vegetables such as asparagus and beans.

You won’t find prairies outside of North America… but that’s only because they have their own words for this type of terrain! In other countries, they’d be called things like savannas, grasslands or shrublands.

Many animals make the prairie their home, from the lumbering bison to the black-tailed prairie dog to earthworms and grasshoppers! Did you know that the bison is the heaviest land animal in North America?

There isn’t much untouched prairie land left, as most of it is used for farming and ranching, but there are still some stretches of untouched land and some have been restored by re-planting native species.  In addition to the Prairie Grassland wallpaper and flooring from Ganz eStore, this farm features the Countryside Cottage Veggie Garden, the Barnyard Leafy Greens Garden, and the Countryside Cottage Garden Path.

There’s no doubt that the prairies are extremely important to our food supply — and to remember your field trip here, we’ve got a code for a Decorative Wheat Sheaf as a souvenir! You can enter this code in the Code Shop.

Have you had fun exploring the Prairie Grassland? Hope you were paying attention — there will be a quiz later! We’ll be heading out for another field trip soon, so see you then.

I remember these wheat sheaf prizes from a fall celebration when I was little. I didn’t care for them then, but now I love them!! Love the patch of them in Sophie’s prairie.

How cool! That’s a neat looking room. =] I like the prairies and countryside over the city, it’s so much more open and quiet, with fewer cars and people everywhere. That’s just my opinion though. I know some people love the city, but I couldn’t live there. =P Thanks for the code!
