Quizzy’s Word Challenge – A great game for a clever group!

If you’re looking for a quick game to play with your clever friends, look no further than this one! This is a modified version of the real game, but it’s just as much fun!

What you need: Three words/phrases written on large pieces of paper (we suggest “Balloons” “Celebrate” “Webkinz World”, note paper, pencils, timer

What you do:

1.       There are three rounds in this game. Each round takes two minutes.

2.       Reveal the word to your friends. Since you already know what it is, you might want to be the time keeper, announcer and prize-giver.

3.       Start the time and have your friends write down as many other words that they can make from the letters in the big word. They don’t have to use all the letters in the word, of course, and they can only use the letters that are present (for example: “loons” would be an acceptable word from “balloons”, but “bell” would not, because there’s no e in the word. “Rate” would be an acceptable word from “celebrate” but “rater” would not, as there’s only one “R” in “celebrate”).

4.       When the two minutes is up, have your friends read off their words. Keep track of how many words each person gets. The person with the most words wins that round! Remember: the words have to be real and spelled right. If you’re not sure, look it up!

5.       Play two more rounds. Keep adding the words up between the rounds (so, if Bob got 10 words in the first round, 10 in the second and 20 in the third, his total score is 40). The person with the most words at the end of the game wins!

Fence Painting

What you need: eight colored squares (two of each: blue, red, yellow, green), magnets, a magnetic board, sheet, markers  (enough for each player to have a marker in blue, red, yellow and green), paper

What you do:

1.       Make the colored squares from construction paper or cardstock. Attach a magnet to the back.

2.       Gather your friends around a magnet board or magnetic surface (like the fridge!).

3.       Tell your guests that you’re going to ‘paint the fence’ by moving the four of the squares into a specific pattern. Their job is to look at the pattern and copy it before you cover it up with a sheet.

4.       Blocking the pattern from your friends, arrange four of the colored squares. Step out of the way so they can see the pattern. Count to two in your head and then cover the pattern with a sheet. Your friends have to copy down the pattern you made (remembering it accurately).

5.       Have your friends hold up their patterns when they’re done. Check them out and give a point to whoever was correct.

6.       Play for two more rounds. Award prizes at the end to anyone who won a round.

Key Craze

Opening treasure boxes is a great way to celebrate!

What you need: Cardstock, ten boxes of various sizes, key to outline, scissors, ribbon, ten prizes, marker, decorations for the boxes, hole punch

What you do:

1.       Trace our key onto your cardstock. You’ll need to trace at least fifteen keys.

2.       Draw a shape on the top of the key –  you’ll need a different shape for each the keys. We suggest: heart, star, moon, circle, equilateral triangle, rectangle, square, hexagon, octagon, oval, diamond, isosceles triangle, scalene triangle, pentagon, eight pointed-star

3.       Punch a hole at the top of each key and run a piece of ribbon through it. Tie the ribbon into a loop.

4.       Decorate each box. Make the boxes look really special. This is a great activity to do with friends or a sibling.

5.       This next step should be done by you. On the bottom of each box, draw one of the ten shapes. Five of the keys will have shapes that DON’T match a box. The other ten will match one of the boxes.

6.       Hide the keys around a room in your house. A recreation room would be perfect for this. If the weather is nice, hang them around your yard.

7.       Put a prize in each treasure chest and close the box.  Put the treasure chests in the middle of the recreation room or your yard. Make sure no one peeks at the shapes on the bottom!

8.       Have your friends hunt for the keys. They can only carry one key each back to the treasure chest. They have to choose the chest they want to try and open. If the key they are holding matches the shape on the bottom of the treasure box, they can open it and get the prize inside. If it DOESN’T match, you get to take the key and hang it up somewhere around the yard again.  No one but the person who tried to open the box should see the shape.

9.       See how fast your friends can find the keys to open all the boxes!

Jumbleberry Fields

What you need: plastic bucket, four small blocks, markers, small, medium and large prizes, legend

What you do:

1.       Color in sides of each of the blocks. The colors should work like this:

a.       Block 1: 2 yellow, 2 red, 1 green, 1 purple

b.      Block 2: 1 yellow, 3 red, 1 green, 1 purple

c.       Block 3: 1 yellow, 2 red, 2 green, 1 purple

d.      Block 4: 3 yellow, 1 red, 1 green, 2 purple

2.       Put the blocks in a plastic cup.

3.       Make a legend for the game. The legend can be something like this:

Red = 1 point

Yellow = 1 point

Green = 2 points

Purple = 3 points

Small prize = 4-6 points

Medium prize = 7-9 points

Large prize = 10-12 points

4.       Have your friend shake up the bucket and dump the small blocks.

5.       Tally up your friend’s score. For example, if they got: red, red, green, purple that means they got 7 points – a medium prize! Your friend can choose to claim their prize or try for a re-roll. Each person only gets one re-roll. If your friend re-rolls and gets red, red, yellow, yellow, they only get a score of 4 – a small prize. That’s the risk you run if you re-roll!

6.       Hand out the prizes as your friends complete their rolls!
