Webkinz Next: Changes to Gardening

Since the release of Gardening in Webkinz Next, it has consistently been one of the best ways to earn KinzCash for players. Plant your crops, wait a few days, collect your crops, sell them for fun and profit. We love gardening so much that we added the Farmer’s Market to give you the ability to earn even more KinzCash selling your crops.

Over the years, some players have taken gardening to an extreme, filling multiple properties with nothing but crops and earning so much KinzCash that our own internal alert systems meant to prevent cheating have thought that there was a problem when there wasn’t. Simply put, the economy of Webkinz was not designed for this much KinzCash to be earned this easily.

We have therefore made some changes to how gardening works:

1) If you have 500 or more crops (growing plants), either planted or in your dock, you will no longer be able to purchase additional seeds from the W-Shop. This is a “soft cap” on gardening. If you have more than 500 crops planted right now, it won’t affect them in any way. Also, you can continue to purchase your three seeds per day from the Farmer’s Market, even if you have more than 500. This cap does not apply to harvested food/crops.

2) Plants can now dry out. You may now see a Watering Can over your crop. If you leave the plant without watering it, it will not continue to grow. When you do water the crop, it will return to its bright color and be ready to move to the next stage the next day. To be 100% clear, your crops can never “die”. All being dried out does is delay the growth cycle. Also, crops planted in the Farmer’s Plot will never become dried out. So, we’ve added a little work to gardening that rewards players who tend to their crops daily.

3) We’ve removed the notice for when your crops are expired, as long as you have at least one soil in your dock. This a much-requested feature from dedicated farmers, and we are happy to add it, while ensuring that players who are new to gardening know why their crop disappeared.

We have more plans to continue to improve gardening, such as adding weeding, bountiful harvests and rewarding players for dedicated gardening by giving their plants additional harvests beyond the standard 10. Finally, we are considering ways of allowing players to earn additional Farmer’s Plots.

Gardening has long been a popular feature in Webkinz World and we will continue to aim to make it fun and profitable, while ensuring that it is a balanced part of Webkinz’ gameplay.

I am not a tech-oriented person, and I don’t understand how players with big or even huge farms are setting off alarms. No matter how many crops a player has harvested, he or she can only sell 50 per market day.

Salley please tell me you are not going to go back to doing this on classic. I have several large gardens on all of my accounts and It would not be fun to have to weed and water them and especially to have them dry up.

Some of these updates are very good ideas, however I feel it might be helpful in the future if surveys would be put out before big changes like this are made. It seems clear that the changes to gardening aren’t very popular, and it might save a lot of time and effort if you were to ask players what they want beforehand. That said, I’m very excited about the possibility of earning more farmer’s plots, and hope you’ll consider the other feedback your players are providing

    yea, more farmers plots

Yes, it’s becoming like it was on Classic. I would let my crops die after we had our first frost that killed our real garden. Just thought it was weird to see crops growing in the snow. I have a couple of haunted gardens in Classic that I wished the plants would remain dead year round. Didn’t it rain on the gardens in Classic too or is my memory going bad?

My only concern with the new gardening updates is that I am a very diligent gardener if and when I am able to actually log in and play. I am still having problems getting the log in screen to load. I have not been able to log in to play since the first couple of days of the second week of the lovely leaves season. I had to contact my son, who lives in another state and walk him through signing in to my account purchasing all the season prizes with my diamonds and claiming all the season prizes for me. I had to do the same thing for the previous season also even though I was able to play further along in that season so It didn’t cost me quite so much to purchase the prizes. I’m very glad that our plants won’t actually die as I have no way to determine when or if I’ll be able to sign in to Next again. I did always think that the gardening in Next was too easy and should have some something occur to make us work at least a little for it. I think the updates are very reasonable even if the kinz cash payout wasn’t being stretched to the limit.

Adding time-wasting, unfun, non-educational chores like watering and weeding is a TERRIBLE idea. It was taken out of Classic, so why add it to Next? Makes no sense.

I take it you do not think raising crops are not educational – but they are. I live on a farm. When I was younger we had a 3 acre truck patch. It is a lot of work, one thing you learn is which crops like a lot of water and which ones don’t. Like muskmelon like it dry. Then you also learn how to preserve the vegetables and fruits – can, freeze. or dry them. Let me tell you home grown is much better tasting than store bought fruits and veggies.

Terrible idea, watering and weeding. How much money do you think 20 dollars times 50 goes in the game when items cost 1000 of dollars .

This is how it was in the beginning of Classic. It was not possible to keep crops alive so the watering of the plants was changed. What I don’t understand is why Webkinz thinks growing crops and earning kinzcash is a bad thing. The harder you work, the further you get ahead. It’s a life lesson. Now we are limited to how many plants we can purchase. Seems to me, controls are being put in place so we don’t succeed beyond Ganz “expectations.” Most of us spend “money” to play the game. Some have more than one account. Yet we put up with constant game glitches, programming errors, etc., and continue to play. It’s very sad that this game has become a cash cow for the company. The concept is great but is now getting lost in the bureaucracy of the company’s need for more profit.

If I have to water and eventually weed, can I maybe not have to replace the crop? Getting crops into the right decorative position can be tricky, so I would rather water than replace.
