First of all – thank you again to everyone who entered our 2017 Pet Design Contest. We can’t say enough how difficult it has been to choose a winner. There were almost 900 amazing entries which we narrowed down to a list of ten wonderful finalists. We read your comments and we discussed it among our team.
We decided to go with a unique pet based on a real animal that we think will make a great addition to the Webkinz family. The adorable Axolotl by Taydarsauce is our winning design and will be available in the eStore starting on Webkinz Day 2017.

I have two ideas for a PSI. I have not read all the earlier comments, so if these were already mentioned, my apologies. I had never heard of an Axolotl, so this has been educational. In doing some research on this beautiful amphibian, in its natural state, it is strictly an underwater neotenic animal. So my initial thought for a PSI was a submarine… because this is Webkinz… and we anthropomorphize animals everyday. But it also seems that this little cutie is all but extinct in the wild. Since the Axolotl exists primarily in captivity now, my second thought was that an aquarium might make a good psi, and I don’t think there are any psi aquariums.
Thanks for this research RubyCubes. Wow what a truly distinctive creature. I never even heard of this animal. I have seen some spectacular Aquariums. Notable mentions are: New Brunswick Aquarium and Marine Centre, Tropicarium Budapest and Toronto’s Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada. We don’t get away often but when we do, I recall the aquariums vividly as they are always captivating. I am so happy we have this new unique pet in our family. Good job Webkinz team for the making the difficult decision a good one. Well done Taydarsauce for bringing up this unique amphibian!
Those are amazing ideas! I chose to use Lake Xochimilco as the PSI because that’s the only lake in Mexico [and by extension, the world] where axolotls are found in the wild. :) I wonder how much my ideas will influence the final picks!
You have certainly stirred up a lot of curiosity here. Yes, a rare, type of salamander with healing properties only found in that muddy lake in Mexico. How on earth did you ever discover this species Scientists/Medical experts are trying to learn more about?
I love it! Congratulations! I had figured the axolotl would win. It’s definently one of my favorites. When will there be another design contest? This one was fun :)
The judges had a very difficult decision to make and I think the others who were chosen should be so proud of their creations as well. The Orchid Mantis really sticks in my mind and the Hippocampus, as well. I hope they will be considered as pets to create, they were imaginative and well thought out. I am so looking forward to adopting this lil guy! Congratulations, Taydar, Job WELL done!
