Salley’s Happy Earth Day
Dear Diary, Today went better than even I could’ve expected! We had SO many Webkinz turn out to help clean up Kinzville. I was amazed – and delighted! It’s really great to see how involved everyone was, and how much they wanted to help keep Kinzville beautiful. We cleaned for about five hours, and then we enjoyed the delicious treats Chef Gazpacho and Chef Sophia made for us. I even got to stand up and make a little speech at the end of the day! I thanked everyone for all their help, and encouraged them to be as green as possible every day of the year, not just on Earth Day. I got a huge round of applause at the end of my speech. I really feel like I’ve made a difference! Love, Salley
Earth Day: Rain in Kinzville
Salley Cat here. After all my careful planning I think that my big earth day project is turning into a gigantic puddle of mud! I got up this morning so excited for Earth Day and it is pouring rain! Can you believe it? Especially after the way all my friends pulled together and got the whole thing off the ground when I was bogged down with too much to do. I mean, we all did all that hard work, but now what? I can’t expect all the volunteers to show up in the rain. I mean, would you want to trudge around in the mud searching for trash? After all the effort everyone put into this event I think it’s all going to be washed away by rain. I would cry but it wouldn’t make any difference – I’m already soaked.
A Concerned Email from Nibbles
From: Nibbles To: Laurabeard Subject: WHERE ARE YOU? Dear Laurabeard, What’s happening? I’ve been so worried ever since your last letter about the thief that you and Dogbeard were on the trail of! Who was the mysterious thief that had been stealing from the kitchen? Was it one of the crew? Did you and Dogbeard catch them? Did the cook have them thrown in irons? Laurabeard, I am so worried about you. If you get this email please respond. I really want to know what is happening! Your very worried friend, Nibbles
Salley Cat: Excited for Earth Day!
Dear Diary, I think I can safely say that no matter what happens tomorrow, we’ve worked REALLY hard to make it the best Earth Day ever! My friends and I have been so busy all day today. We organized all the gloves and bags for the clean up tomorrow, called to make sure the restaurants were still going to be able to donate the food (they are) and baked a bunch of cookies as an extra ‘thank you’ to everyone who has helped and donated. As I was brushing my teeth, my mom came into the bathroom and said how proud she was of me. She said that what I’ve done is huge and sets a good example for others. That made me feel so good about this! I know that Earth Day is going to be a huge success. Now I just need to get a few hours of sleep so I can be ready for tomorrow! Love, Salley
Alex Tiger’s Scientific Notebook
Notes from today: I had high hopes for my mineral specimen, when I went to see Arte Fact. Arte was very pleased to see it – he spent a long time looking at it with a magnifying glass. He chipped off a little piece and looked at it under a microscope – and that’s when he said “uh, oh.” I was worried that he was going to tell me the stone was cursed or something (with Nafaria around, you never know). But no – he said that the stone was safe. It’s just not unique. It’s called “Bluffium” and it’s something he discovered years ago. He said that he called it Bluffium because it LOOKS very valuable and shiny – but really, it’s quite common. Almost like fool’s gold. So I didn’t find anything particularly special, unfortunately. Arte poured me a cup of hot chocolate and gave me a couple of cookies. He took out his old notebooks and showed me his notes from when he was my age. Know what? They’re really similar to mine! He was super-interested in artifacts, of course, but he did to a fair bit of rock-finding as well. Arte said that of all … Read more
Green Tip 5 from Salley: Saving Energy
Hey all! It’s Salley again, with one more green tip: how to save energy! The easiest way is to turn off the lights (or any electronic devices) when you’re not in a room. Also, turn off the water when you’re brushing your teeth. Another great way to save energy is to take your bike or walk instead of driving. What other energy-saving ideas can you think of, friends?
Alex Makes a Find
Notes from the Science Journal of Alex Tiger After establishing a new search area just outside of Adventure Park it looks like my efforts to discover a new rock MAY have paid off. I don’t want to speak too soon but it would appear that I have discovered a very rare and valuable specimen. I have uncovered a large, shiny mineral of a type that I have never come across before. I took the specimen home – I mean to my lab – and put it under the microscope. Upon studying it closely I can see that its shiny appearance almost resembles that of gold, although it has a slightly different coloration. I have searched through my reference books and so far have been unable to locate a rock that resembles my specimen. And most importantly I have tried to chip into the rock and my failure to do so tells me that this is definitely NOT chocolate. I think I may have a really big discovery on my hands! But I don’t want to get too excited until I’ve shown it to Arte tomorrow. He knows all about rocks and he will be able to verify my find.
Letter from Laurabeard: A Mystery on Board
Dear Nibbles, Life onboard ship is never dull! You will not believe what happened! The cook on the ship can be kind of cranky sometimes. (Dogbeard says it’s because he gets seasick. So why would he take a job on a ship? Weird.) Lately he has been really going nuts because he swears that some of the crew have been sneaking into his galley and stealing food at night. All of the crew denied that they had taken anything and I certainly haven’t been going in there, but the cook didn’t believe us. So I guess last night he decided to set up a trap. He put a pile of flour in front of the door so that when the thief came in and stole some food, they would leave a trail of white footprints leading back to their cabin. It’s actually pretty smart, huh? He didn’t tell anyone he was planning on doing this, and just a minute ago he comes into the kitchen and starts shouting “I knew it! Now I will have them! They will be thrown in irons!” (Um, I happen to know for a fact that the whole ‘being thrown in irons’ thing is SO … Read more
Green Tip 4 from Salley: Things to do Every Day!
Hi Everyone! It’s Salley here with a few quick green tips that you can do every single day – and help make the world a better place. Turn out the light when you leave the room. Turn off the water when you brush your teeth. Don’t litter. Reduce, reuse, recycle as much as you can. Bring your lunch in a reusable container. Encourage your friends to be green! Use both sides of a piece of paper. Don’t throw out recyclables. Start a compost pile. Walk or ride your bike instead of taking the car. What other great green tips do you have, friends?
Roberta Rabbit: Going Green
Roberta Rabbit here with another successful ‘Kinz meeting. Today we told Salley how much work we had done to help her with her Earth Day plans. She was SO happy, I thought she was going to cry! I guess she’s been pretty stressed out lately. We managed to get one hundred volunteers to help with the Kinzville cleanup. We also managed to get tons of donations from businesses (Arte and Debbie Dragon were especially generous), and Chef Gazpacho and Chef Sophia even volunteered to make goodies for the clean up crew to enjoy after the job is done! Salley thanked us and said that next time, she’d definitely want our help with her plans. We reminded her that even though you CAN do stuff by yourself, sometimes it’s easier (and more fun) with friends! Earth Day is going to be AWESOME!
Green Tip 3 from Salley: Recycling
Hey Everyone! It’s Salley again with another green tip. Today I want to talk to you about recycling. If you’ve already done your part to reduce (use less), reuse (use something more than once), the next best thing to do is recycle it. That means the item will get made into something else. If you have a recycling program in your town, you probably put all of your recyclables out by the curb and they get picked up and taken to a recycling plant. There, the can be remade into different things. Glass can be recycled an infinite number of times! The important thing to know is what can and cannot be recycled. Each town has different rules, but generally you can recycle cardboard and glass (and usually plastic drinking bottles). Find out your local rules and make sure to recycle as much as you can!
Salley: Starting to Panic
Oh no! It’s Salley. I am really stressing about this Earth Day Clean Up I have planned. I don’t think it’s going to be nearly as successful as I thought. I really wanted to ask all the businesses for donations of garbage bags and work gloves, but I barely had time to go around to half the businesses in town! And I wanted to gather up a lot more volunteers, but I ran out of time so I only managed to visit a couple of neighborhoods to ask for help. I am going to have to make do with just a few volunteers. Right about now I kind of wish I could be as carefree as the rest of my friends. Today I seemed to see all of them at one point just hanging out around town. Stoogles and Sparky clearly have plenty of free time because I saw both of them going into the Tournament Arena and then the Arcade right afterward. Must be nice! Cowabelle and Roberta were just chatting with people on the corner. They were showing them some piece of paper or something. Who knows what that’s all about? And then Molly and Polly prance out … Read more
Green Tip 2 from Salley: Reusing
Hey Everyone, It’s me – Salley. Today I want to talk to you about reusing. Reusing is another thing we can do to help out the environment. When you reuse something, you use it again. For instance, I noticed that Stoogles always brought his sandwich in a plastic bag. I asked him why he didn’t just invest in a sandwich container that he could use over and over again. He said that was a great idea! Now, he reuses it each day at lunch. When school started in September, I still had my binders from last year. They were looking pretty rough, though. Instead of buying new ones, I decided to recover my old ones with fabric and decorate them with fabric pens – and they’re gorgeous! Instead of buying new, I just reused what I had. Do you have any good examples of reusing, friends?
Salley’s Feeling Overwhelmed
Oh wow. It’s Roberta. Remember back at Christmas when I decided to make all my presents and it got to be a little overwhelming? Well, I stopped by to see Salley today and boy, did I ever recognize that crazed look in her eye! I know she thinks that because she has been president of school council she can handle all this responsibility, but she has just taken on way too much. She wouldn’t let us help her organize her clean up event and now she has got a million things to do and Earth Day is just around the corner! She has been going around the town telling everyone about the event and taking down names of volunteers, she had to meet with the Earth Day committee to coordinate their events, she wants to give an expensive reward to every single volunteer and she has been trying to hit every business in town to ask for donations. Oh, Salley, Salley, Salley. I wish she would just realize that getting some of us to take some of the duties off of her shoulders doesn’t make her efforts any less valid. I’d better talk to the rest of the ‘Kinz, don’t … Read more
