I finally got in!!! :D
cool contest
How come it won’t let me enter?
If there are no parentheses, you just do the math from left to right–start at the left, do the first step, get that answer then do the next step and keep going to the end of the equation–learned before we had Google–hope this helps too; P.S. Think I will double check with a calculator from now on–thanks for sharing that!
ohhh I thought you were supposed to use the order of operations.
This is so adorable!! I’m so glad I entered!
I tried two possible answers for the math question but it’s rejecting both of them!
try an online calculator….cant go wrong! :)
Isn’t it BEDMAS
?
PEMDAS. The order of operations. Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. You do the equation left to right, first doing the P, then left to right again for E, and so forth.
Yep! I asked my granddaughter. I figured she ought to know. LOL. Very good explaination, noelle147! >{^;^}<
Well, now I’m really confused, bc, after my granddaughter explained PEDMAS (which I understood as the way above), she sent me the PEDMAS example she that she claimed she learned in 3rd Grade as follows: *first step, all the Parenthesese; *then all the Exponents next; *then all the Multiplication or Division (whichever comes first); *then, finally, all the Addition or Subtraction (whichever comes first). So… 7X5-4+7= 38. (Not 24). Well, I’m too old to remember 3rd Grade! Ugh! Why do we have to do this anyway? I could be wrong, but I don’t think too many robots are entering Webkinz contest! I hope Light1997 is right! >{^;^}<
In the example you posted, you’re adding 4+7 before performing the subtraction. The subtraction is performed first :) The skill-testing question is a legal requirement for the contest, not a test against bots.
I used the way noelle147 explained and it went through. So, who knows? I sure don’t! >{^;^}<
Thanks, Sally Webkinz. Unfortunately, I already entered the wrong answer. I really did think that using PEDMAS meant to use addition before subtraction. But, seriously? It’s a legal requirement? I would have never guessed that! (I wonder who came up with that idea. LOL) >{^;^}<
Legal departments, I guess :D It’s to make sure it’s legally distinct from a lottery, which has a whole whack of other legal obligations.
LOL, Sally Webkinz! I just read your reply about a lottery when looking for a reply I read somewhere but can’t remember in which thread. (Duh, lol) Idk if you’ll see this since it so far back. But, I really got a kick out of your reply! >{^;^}<
For mine PEMDAS didn’t work. I have to re enter the contest now. Seriously they couldn’t have made the question 1+1?!
A skill testing question is a legal requirement. We cannot make it 1+1.
Yes, Morningdew, it is. Also called BEDMAS or BOMDAS Same thing as PEMDAS. Brackets, Ordinals (powers or roots), Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. OR BEDMAS (simplified) Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.
I entered! I really hope I win. I have never won, so chances are, I wont. But a girl can still dream. Haha
Me too, me too.
It probably means that it did go through; I think the main objective is to see if you are a robot, so perhaps any answer is better than no answer. I doubt every kid got it right unless each kid’s parents answered it for them. If you are still worried I think you can email Ganz and maybe they can answer your question.
I didn’t get it right and I’m in above-grade math. You aren’t supposed to use the order of operations, you’re supposed to do it left to right. It’s ironic because at school, we’re told to never do that
It is order of operations.
I did the math wrong when i filled out the contest and now it wont let me enter again!!!! Please someone help this doesnt seem fair ): I had just read it wrong
thats sooooo unfair i can relate
Oh, Just make a new account on the ganzstore website. You should be able to enter then.
I have done that so many times! I wish we had one more chance to re-enter! I always check the answer in a calculator or online before I submit. I also like to enlarge the page so I make sure I read it correctly. Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish between the plus and division signs! :(
Since there are no parentheses in the equation, it is very hard to know you’ve come up with the answer they are looking for.
To help me remember how to use order of operations with math problems, I use PEMDAS–parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. Hope that helps!
actually I did that and you’re supposed to do it left to right. I mean seriously why do they only give you one chance?
that always used to happen with me, so now when i want to solve the math equation, i copy and paste it onto the google search bar, click search, and the answer will come up on a google calculator. hope this helps! :)
