Cowabelle Helps Roberta get Organized!

Okay – after Roberta’s awful test result last week she actually admitted that she’s worried about how she’s going to do this year in school. I know her study habits have never been great and as we get older, it’s only going to get harder to keep up. I guess I’m pretty lucky because my mom’s a teacher and she helped me come up with a homework system, so now I’m going to share my system with Roberta.

It’s funny because Roberta loves playing school and being the teacher, so we decided we would set up our makeshift classroom in her parents’ living room and work there.

The single most important thing I do to keep on top of my homework is also the simplest – I do it!!! Every day, as soon as I get home, I take 30 minutes and I sit down at our kitchen table and do all my homework right away. I know it might seem easier to put it off, but I like getting it out of the way. Then I have the rest of the day to myself without the thought of it hanging over me like a black cloud. If it’s a lot of really tough homework, sometimes I break it up into two sessions of 15 minutes, or three sessions of ten minutes, and I have a drink or a snack in between.

Assignments are another story. When a teacher gives me a project to work, I break it down into sections and make a timetable. For instance, say I had a project due October 15. I decide that I will have the research done by the end of September. I will have a rough draft written by October 5. By October 10, I will have my good copy written out, and I’ll have my cover page done by the 12th. I’ll do my bibliography on the 13th so that I have one day left over to proof it carefully and catch any mistakes by the time it’s due.

Roberta actually really loved that idea. She said she gets really overwhelmed whenever she gets an assignment and she doesn’t know where to start. Now, she can break it down into chunks that don’t seem so scary!

Wow – Roberta seemed to feel really good about herself after I showed her all my tricks for homework. I must be a pretty good teacher. Do you think I could follow in my mom’s footsteps and teach at Kinzville Academy when I grow up?

That’s a good idea! The only problem for me is that a lot of my projects and essays and other assignments are most often due the very next day. So, I don’t really have any other choice besides doing it or not doing it. And of course I’m gonna do it. It’s really important to keep up your grades before you get to highschool… and for me, I only have a year left until I’m out of elementary school! AAAGGGHH! But, luckily, I still managed to keep my grades up over the years… my record avergae last year was 86.4%! :D
P.S. Not trying to brag. LOL.
