What you need: Your favorite sugar cookie recipe dough, powdered sugar, vanilla, food coloring, water, corn syrup, butter knife, spoon, large bowl, smaller bowls, toothpicks, adult assistant
What you do:
1. Roll out your cookie dough. Using an egg-shaped cookie cutter (or a round metal one pressed into an egg shape), cut out cookies. Have your adult assistant bake them.
2. When the cookies are cool, make the icing! In your large bowl, add two cups of powdered sugar, two tablespoons of hot water, two teaspoons of corn syrup. Mix them together until the icing is smooth (you can add more water or more icing sugar, if you find your icing is too thick or too thin – you want it to be about the consistency of craft glue).
3. Divide the icing into the smaller bowls (you’ll need one bowl for each color of icing you’d like to make).
4. Put one or two drops of liquid food coloring into each bowl. Mix it well.
5. Spoon some icing onto a cookie. Spread it around so your cookie is covered.
6. Using your toothpick, put little dots or lines of a different color all over your cookie. Drag the toothpick through the drop to make an interesting shape.
7. You can use this technique to make waves, suns, and abstract designs! Use your imagination and use lots of colors to make your cookies awesome!
8. Leave the cookies to dry. When the icing is dry, share your cookies with your friends!
