Designer Elephant Blog: Colors

Elwin and I have been debating what color we should paint our new rec room and that got us thinking about the effects you can create using color in your décor. Elwin is convinced that we should go with bold, dark tones for our space. He likes to throw elaborate parties for our friends and he feels that a deep scarlet or midnight blue would make a dramatic backdrop to his little soirees.

While I agree that WOULD make for exciting parties, I plan to use our rec room a lot and I wonder if such dark shades would feel too heavy for me to be around all the time. I plan to use the room for crafting and reading and if I had to sit in a dark room every day I think that would bring down my mood. I suggested that we go with a light color, like a pretty yellow. I think that would make me feel happy – like the sun was shining down on me.

I think Elwin and I will have to find some sort of compromise. Maybe we could use different shades of the same color to get the effect we’re both looking for. If we painted the walls a soft blue, but added furniture and accessories in a dark color that could give Elwin the drama he’s looking for and still let me feel like I’m in a more open space.

What do you think? Do you ever notice that the colors and tones around you have an effect on your mood?

OK mix dark and light use Burgundy wall paint and for the floor use dinner tile flooring and use a spa pool and an art desk with some comfy couch’s and then a recliner would do well get some plants to throw in then on the wall hang your art work maybe a picture of you and your friends even your family oh and put in a TV and a treadmill and in a corner get three chairs and put in the middle of them a table with food on it or a book that’s what gets guest i throw party’s and use the chair thing works like a charm hope you like my idea  swallow  : Mrgreen: and

I think that you should paint the wall pink with light and dark purple stripes! So it`s fun yet sophisticated!!

I prefer dark colors but maybe you could compromise by painting the walls like pale green or white or something and using dark furniture with a splash of light gold here and there. That would look nice.

I like the idea of midnight blue, along with some lighter, but still calm and quiet blues. Make it kind of like a beautiful spring night with a full moon and millions of star bathing everything with a soft, silvery-blue light, it would be so relaxing and dreamy. I know it would make me happy and calm, and I think it would do for a nice party, if you like classical, big band, swing, that kind of thing, like me. ;)

Hi! Colors are very important depending on mood. I think it would be neat to have a fading effect from light to darker colors…sort of like a rainbow. 2 walls can be the lighter colors that slowly deepen and darken on the other 2 walls. That way each sibling can have their own side of the room to enjoy! Matching room dividers would help too! I’d love to see a elephant shaped beed or gem curtain or room divider! And you never know…I bet you’ll find them enjoying the other side once and a while! GrimesGangNC :)

I think a royal blue would be wonderful and you could use light colors for everything else. I think that would be good for relaxing and having parties. That way you both get what you like.

Today when I woke up I thought I got up early, cause it wasn’t that bright out. Then I looked at the clock and I realized I slept in! Rainy days make me feel tired, and super hot days make me feel tired too sometimes, It was SO hot a day ago, today it’s so dark and cold!
