Friendship Focus: Honesty

By Molly Pig

Friendships are built on honesty. I learned the hard way that when you’re not honest about your feelings and your reasons for doing things, it can damage your relationships. When I first met my friend, Polly, I almost ruined our friendship before it even started.

The trouble was – I wasn’t being honest with anyone.

I was feeling bad because it seemed like everyone in class had paired off with their best friend for Friendship Day – everyone except me that is. And instead of being honest and sharing with my friends how excluded I was feeling, I pretended that it didn’t bother me. Then, when Polly joined our class, I decided that she was going to be my new best friend – whether she liked it or not. I started spending all my time with Polly and ignoring my other friends who I had known forever. They weren’t very happy with me, and when Polly realized I was only trying to be her friend so I’d have a partner for Friendship Day, she wasn’t very happy either.

I should have told my friends that I was feeling left out, and I shouldn’t have tried to befriend Polly for all the wrong reasons. Luckily, I have some WONDERFUL friends and once they realized what was really bothering me, they forgave me.

The important thing to remember is that if I had been honest in the first place, I wouldn’t have hurt my friends and I wouldn’t have hurt Polly. From now on, I’m going to be up front with my friends even when it’s difficult or I feel uncomfortable. Because if you can’t trust your friends, who can you trust?
