What you need: Newspapers, flour, water, masking tape, balloon, round plastic top from a cream cheese or cottage cheese container, round plastic container, non-toxic acrylic paint, non-toxic sealer
What you do:
1. Tear the newspapers into 4-inch x 1-inch strips.
2. Mix the flour and water together (2 cups flour to 1 cup water).
3. Blow up the balloon and tie it (or have your adult assistant help and do this).
4. Put the balloon, tie-side-down into the container (so half of the balloon sticks out from the container).
5. Dip the strips of paper into the flour and water mixture and lay them onto the balloon. You’re going to cover the half of the balloon that’s sticking out of the container.
6. Put one layer of paper and flour mixture on and then stop. This layer needs to dry before you put another layer on.
7. When the first layer is totally dry (this takes about 24 hours), add another layer of paper and flour mixture. Let this layer dry (this takes about 24-36 hours).
8. Tape the round plastic top onto your balloon. This will be the flat bottom of your bowl when it’s all done.
9. Add a third layer. You can wait for this to dry and add a fourth, if you want a really sturdy bowl.
10. When the bowl is totally dry, pull the balloon out of the container and pop it. Pull your bowl off.
11. You can trim the edges of your bowl with scissors, if you like.
12. Paint your bowl with non-toxic paints. Seal the bowl with a non-toxic sealer.
13. When everything is dry, fill your bowl with fruits!
14. This bowl is good for holding dry things – but nothing wet or soggy. If you need to clean this bowl, just wipe it with a cloth – you definitely can’t wash it!
