Inukshuk’s Recipe: Rock Candy

What you need:

-          A wooden skewer or chopstick

-          A clothespin

-          1 cup of water

-          2-3 cups of sugar

-          A tall narrow glass or jar

You will need an adult assistant to help you with this recipe.

What you do:

1. Clip the wooden skewer with the clothespin so that when you set the clothespin across the top of the glass, the wooden skewer hangs down into the glass without touching the sides or bottom.

2. Set skewer and clothespin aside.

3. With the help of your adult assistant, bring the water to a boil. Pour in sugar, about a ¼ cup at a time, stirring each time until sugar is completely dissolved.

4. Be patient – as you add more sugar, it will take longer to dissolve. Keep adding sugar until no more will dissolve. Remove from heat and allow it to cool for 20 minutes.

5. Have your assistant carefully pour the mixture into the glass or jar. Place the clothespin back across the top of the glass so that the skewer is hanging straight down into the mixture without touching the bottom or sides of the glass.

6. Place the glass jar somewhere it will not be disturbed and leave it for 3 – 7 days. When you come back, you will find a pretty treat awaiting you.
