Silkie Chicken Contest Winners

Congratulations to Michael, Alexandra, Meaghan, Natalia and Keaton. They’ve each been sent a Secret Code for an eStore exclusive Silkie Chicken. We wanted to know how the Silkie Chicken got such fluffy feathers! Read the winning entries below.

Once there was a chicken, he lived in a small hole on a farm. All the other chickens made fun of him because he smelled like pickles and he liked to roll around in the dirt. He wasn’t the cutest chicken on the farm, but one day he met a dove, and they played together all day. The next day the chicken said to the dove, you look slick. How do you get your feathers so fluffy? I spread mayo on them, said the dove. Wow I ought to try that! Then a peacock waddled up and asked, what are you guys doing? Nothing said the chicken. He didn’t want the peacock to learn the trick. That day the chicken tried it, but the outcome wasn’t so good. I guess it only works for doves, the chicken thought, so he went to bed. The next morning he got up early to go see the dove. On his way he unfortunately got sprayed by a skunk. He took a bath in tomato juice, and when he was done he smelled nice and was very fluffy and sleek. Then he went back to the farm and all the chickens loved his fluffy feathers! – Michael

The day the Silkie Chicken became a stylish and fluffy dude happened like this. Silkie was getting ready for his first day of school and he wanted to be perfectly groomed. After his shower, he asked his Mom if he could use her hair stuff to do his feathers. She said, “Sure, use that purple gel and that pink lotion and that green liquid.” So, Silkie used whatever was in reach and experimented. He rubbed in the purple stuff, the pink stuff and the green stuff and looked in the mirror. He said, “Gee, this all looks so spikey and stiff. I think I need one more thing.” He got out his mother’s super-duper hot air hair blower and turned it on. All was fine. It started drying up the purple and pink and green stuff. THEN, when he tried to turn off the hair dryer it would not, not, not turn off. So Silkie got blown around with that hair dryer for half an hour and every part of his body was like really puffed out. So, grooming finally done and as he looked in the mirror, Silky said, “Wow, I like it.” And off to school for a great day. – Alexandra

Once upon a time, there was baby chick that hatched in a nest of cottonballs and white silk. The baby chick grew up into a white chick because the mother hen fed her marshmallows, popcorn, milk, bread, sugar, coconut, and cake with vanilla icing. (Basically, nothing but white colored foods.) The chick’s feathers were very soft and very fragile, so she couldn’t fly. But when she grew older, the white chick wanted to fly up to the white fluffly clouds. The white chick left the nest to go to a flying school so she could train to fly one day. She would spend hours flapping her thin, snowy wings in front of a giant fan. Sadly, even with all her practice, she still couldn’t fly. The white chick decided to try parachuting instead and she laughed happily as she “flew” through great white, fluffy clouds. When she landed, her family pointed to her feathers. The wind from her jump had ruffled her feathers making them very silky and soft. From then on, her name was the Silkie Chick. - Meaghan

Why is the Silkie Chicken so….silkie? Well, it all started long ago, before Chyna Chicken and Sazandra Silkworm met. Chyna was peacefully strolling through the woods, looking for some grub to eat when she ran into a fine net-like material. “ARAGUH!” she exclaimed in disgust, “I’m covered in SPIDERWEB!” “It’s not spiderweb, my dear,” said a soft voice from somewhere in the trees. Chyna turned her head to see a worm. But this worm was long, graceful, even maybe BEAUTIFUL. Chyna had never seen a lovely worm like this. “That’s latest creation, dearie. I call it silk. Now, let me introduce myself. I am Sazandra Silkworm and I created the stuff you’re in.” “Oh, I’m sorry I messed it up,” Chyna apologized. As she freed herself, the silk would not and could not detatch from her. “Oh my!” said Sazandra, “I don’t think it’ll ever come off!” Chyna didn’t fret. “I think I look GREAT! So soft! I think I’ll tell my friends about your silk, you should make a LOT more!” - Natalia

Once upon a time, Arte was walking along the river bank when he found a small chicken stranded on a log in the center of the stream. Artie dived in and saved the chicken. The chicken told Arte that his name was Cooper, the Silkie Chicken. Cooper was soaking wet and drenched, Arte took Cooper back to the Curio Shop with him. When they got to the shop, Arte asked Cooper how he ended up on the log. Cooper told Arte that a flash flood had hit his home barnyard, sweeping Cooper into the river. Arte noticed that Cooper was shivering and offered to dry him. Arte took a hair dryer and started to dry Cooper. Cooper started to dry out and Arte decided to go make dinner. Arte accidentally left the hair dryer on and when he got back, Cooper was extremely fluffy! Arte got a mirror and showed Cooper, worried he would be mad. But Cooper loved his new feather-style. “I always felt so normal and just like every other chicken at the barn, now I’m different! I like standing out!”- Keaton
