Postcard from Laurabeard – getting closer to the island

Dear Nibbles, We are still in search of the mysterious island full of fabled riches that the captain we met told us about, but today we discovered a very unusual – and delicious – clue! We were sailing in the area where we thought the island must be located, but there is still a lot of fog cover and so far we haven’t spotted it again. I was up in the crow’s nest, keeping watch when I noticed something strange floating in the waters around our ship. I climbed down and grabbed a net to scoop one of the strange objects out of the water. I immediately realized that it was one of those weird brown, egg-shaped pods that I had seen growing on the trees when we had that quick glimpse of the island one day. We took the pod and set it on the table then Dogbeard decided to try cracking it open. He used a mallet to smash the pod, but instead of breaking open, it just broke into a bunch of smaller pieces. Whatever it was, it was solid all the way through. Then suddenly Dogbeard said “Is that what I think it is?” and he … Read more

Cowabelle Cowoline: Not Pleased!

Dear Diary, I am SO furious! The more I think about the auditions yesterday, the angrier I get. Millie Pig (MILLIE PIG!) got chosen as the Queen of the Easter Parade. Why? I have no idea! Millie isn’t talented or beautiful or anything! She’s just a little pig. OK, so she’s cute. But queens are supposed to be regal – not CUTE! Maybe she could be a princess or something. Ugh. I’m going to go and talk to Ms. Birdy and Dr. Quack and see if I can show them the error of their ways. They can always make Millie a princess and make me a queen. THAT would make sense. -          Cowabelle

Salley is starting to feel the responsibility of something greater

Hi there. It’s me, Salley. I’ve really liked being school council president this year. Even the stuff with Purr-cilla hasn’t been that bad because it feels really good to accomplish something, and sometimes the harder you have to work to do something, the better it feels when it actually gets done. So in a weird kind of way, Purr-cilla has actually helped me feel better about my job as president. The thing is, even though being president of the school council is awesome, I started thinking – there is so much going on in the world.  I just love being able to help out the way I’ve helped make things happen at the school this year. Maybe I could take some of the energy that I put into being president and apply it to some bigger problems. So this year, I am going to see what I can do to get involved in Earth Day. I think that is a really important event and I would really like to try and make a difference. I feel like – if it feels that good getting things done for the students at … Read more

Roberta’s Bunny Cupcakes

RobertaCupcake

Millie specifically wanted “Bunny Cupcakes.” No problem! Here’s how you make them:   What you need: Vanilla cupcakes, vanilla icing, small pink jellybeans, small chocolate chips, large marshmallows, pink gummy candy, rolling pin, icing sugar   What you do: Frost your cupcake with the white frosting. Near one edge of the cupcake, put the pink jellybean. Above it, place the two chocolate chips, points down. Cut your large marshmallows in half. One marshmallow makes two ears. Dust your counter and rolling pin with icing sugar. Roll out the marshmallow halves so they’re flat. Roll out the pink gummy candy. Cut it to look like a long pointed oval (this is the inside of your bunny’s ears). Stick the gummy candy onto the marshmallow ears. Stick the marshmallow ears onto your cupcake. Enjoy!

Roberta Rabbit: Not the Easter Bunny

Millie Pig is a very…interesting little girl. I found out why she’s been acting so strangely around me. For some reason, she thinks I’m either the Easter Bunny or related to the Easter Bunny (I’m not). I guess she got the idea because I was dyeing eggs yesterday, and she happened to see me at the park this morning. My paws were all blue and pink and yellow. When she asked why, I told her about the egg dyeing. Her eyes lit up and she said, “What else are you doing for Easter?”I told her about making baskets (and that I had a LOT to do), and chocolates for everyone. By ‘everyone,’ I meant ‘all my friends.’ Not ‘everyone in the world.’ She got this big smile on her face and said, “Are you going to do my basket soon?” I was about to ask her what she meant, but then she continued and said, “I’ve been a good girl! Please, Easter Bunny Roberta, please bring me lots of good stuff!” I said, “I’m not the Easter Bunny, Millie.” And then she said, “Is the Easter Bunny your aunt?” And I said, “No.” … Read more

Tryouts for the Easter Parade

It’s Cowabelle. I cannot believe what just happened. You know how I was trying out to be the Queen of the Easter Parade? Okay, nothing against Molly. I mean, she’s got that whole shouting thing down and all. But I have been practicing and practicing to play the role of the Queen and I really thought that I would do an awesome job! Oh – and I know Stoogles wanted to be King. I’m sure he’d be great but I swear – I was born to play this part! Anyway, we were all doing our tryouts today. Molly had to bring Millie along because her mom had an emergency at work and had to deal with it. Molly and Stoogles had already auditioned, and I was right in the middle of doing this awesome spring dance that I had prepared, when I noticed that the judges weren’t even really paying attention. They were all looking at something over my shoulder. So I turn around and there is Millie, carrying a basket full of plastic eggs, twirling around and tossing eggs to everybody. The judges were laughing their heads off. Okay, people, I get it. … Read more

What NOT to Talk About at a ‘Kinz Meeting

Well, today’s ‘Kinz meeting was definitely…interesting. I brought up the topic of the Easter Parade. BIG mistake! Apparently three of our club members are planning on trying out. Molly, Cowabelle and Stoogles all think they’re going to be the stars of the parade (Stoogles wants to break with tradition and create an Easter King).  Molly says she should be the queen because she has a great hollering voice (this is true). Cowabelle thinks her acting abilities will win her the crown. And Stoogles figures that the royalty should be able to dance well. Which he does. So the auditions should be interesting tomorrow! I’m hoping someone totally different gets to be the queen (or king). Otherwise, I think there could be problems between those three…

Alex gets serious

Scientific study of rocks and plants By Alex Tiger I made a New Year’s resolution over three months ago to try and find a new species of plant or type of rock and so far I’ve found nothing. It’s time to get serious about this. I have decided that I have not been methodical enough in my studies, so I have decided to narrow in on one area at a time and search thoroughly before moving on, keeping meticulous records of where I have searched so far. I’ve started by cordoning off an area near my house. I have borrowed tools from my dad’s workshop and I am going to carry out my digs with precision and care. I have to collect samples and then clean them off and make note of their properties to compare them to existing records. If I find the characteristics are unique, then I will have discovered a new rock or plant! I am determined to do this. I just know that I will find something if I look hard enough.

Cowabelle Cowoline: Queen of the Easter Parade?

Dear Diary, You’ll never, ever believe what I found out today – there’s going to be an Easter parade. And they’re looking for the QUEEN of the parade! Someone with charm and poise and acting ability to ride on the front float and basically be the mascot of the whole thing! Why didn’t they just come and ask me directly? I’m pretty much the perfect cow for the job. There are auditions in two days and I’m so super-excited. I’m a great actress, so I’m almost guaranteed to get the part. I convinced my mom to let me get a new dress for the parade – and maybe even a new hat and some jewelry!   I don’t know how I’m going to sleep tonight or tomorrow night. This is awesome!   Love, Cowabelle

Crafting with Roberta: Pompom Critters

What you  need: Pompoms, craft glue, felt, wiggle eyes, scissors, pipe cleaners, black or brown fabric paint, your imagination                                What you do: Figure out what kind of pompom animal you want to make. I personally love making little chicks! Cut off about an 1 ½ inches from your pipe cleaner. Make a V-shape from the pipe cleaner. Glue your pompom to the pipe cleaner V (these are the chick’s legs). Glue an orange triangle (either felt or construction paper) onto the pompom (this is the beak). Glue two wiggle eyes above the beak. Glue on two rounded yellow triangles for wings. Let your critter dry thoroughly!

Millie is looking forward to a special day!

Hi! It’s me, Roberta. Wow – I was over at Molly’s today and was Millie ever being weird. Molly said that she was just excited about Easter, but she kept staring at me in this strange way. We were working on homework and I would look up and see Millie peering at me around a corner, and when she saw me looking she would giggle and run away. Then later we were making chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen and Millie said that she would only eat MY cookies because I was an expert on chocolate. Huh? When I was leaving she came up and whispered something in Molly’s ear and Molly was just like, “What? What are you talking about? She doesn’t have any basket. I don’t know what you mean.” Molly just looked at me and rolled her eyes.

Postcard from Laurabeard

Dear Nibbles, Do you remember that mysterious island I wrote to you about? Well, today we were sailing through a thick fog, when suddenly the fog parted and for a brief moment we could see land in the distance. Dogbeard grabbed his telescope to take a look but then he just shook his head like he could believe what he had seen. I took the telescope from him and looked, and I could swear that I saw these strange trees with what looked like kind of like coconuts but almost more like brown eggs growing on them. But how could that be? What kind of eggs would grow on trees? Then I saw something grab one of the eggs off of a tree. All I could see was a pair of long ears. Then the wind blew up and the fog closed in, blocking my view. It was the strangest place I had ever seen. I hope we can find it again. Love, Laurabeard
