Roberta’s Homemade Holidays – Wooden Ornament

WoodenOrnament

My grandma is SO into Christmas. It’s her very favorite holiday. Each year, we visit her house and eat a TON of carrot loaf and mashed carrots and carrot cake. YUM! I wanted to make her something very special, and very Christmas-y! What you need: Wooden ornament, acrylic paint, paintbrush, dish of water (to rinse off your brush between colors), place to hang your ornament to dry What you do: Decide how you want to paint your ornament. I went with a pretty simple design that I know would work well with my grandma’s tree. She LOVES green and turquoise, so I knew I had to use lots of it! Paint your ornament carefully. Take your time and make the design gorgeous! If you’re using more than one color, or doing stripes, you might want to let the first color dry before starting the second one. When your ornament is totally done, hang it up to dry. Before you give your ornament to your recipient, tie a ribbon around the top.   My grandma is going to LOVE this!

Roberta’s Homemade Holidays: Picture Frames

Frame

Today, I decided I’d work on the ‘Kinz gifts. Everyone is going to get the same thing, because honestly – this is taking a lot of time! But I’m going to customize each one, so even though they’re the same, they’re different!  What am I talking about? Pictures! And picture frames. This is what you need: Paper shapes, small jewels, wooden craft sticks, cardboard or cardstock, craft glue, picture of your friends   What you do: Glue the wooden craft sticks into a rectangular shape. Glue a piece of cardboard or cardstock on three sides on the back (leave the top open). When the glue is dry, decorate the front of the frame with the paper shapes (I used flowers) and jewels. You can add all sorts of other stuff, if you like (buttons, glitter – whatever you think looks awesome). When that glue is dry, slip a picture of your friends into your frame. You can also add ribbon to the back, if you want your friends to hang this up. Otherwise, you can add a cardboard triangle to the back to help it stand up.

Roberta’s Homemade Holidays: Desk Set

DeskSet

Welcome to my crafty workshop! Today, I’m working on my mom’s gift. She loves being crafty – I guess that’s where I get it from! Mom’s desk is ALWAYS messy, so I thought I could make her a desk set to help organize some of her stuff. Here’s how I did it:   What you need: scrapbooking paper (three different patterns or colors works well – make sure they look good together), scissors, ruler, pencil, shoe box top, paper towel tube, small square box, paper cup, long rectangular box, double-sided tape, craft glue, stickers (optional) What you do: Cover the shoe box top in scrapbook paper. You don’t really need to do the bottom, but make sure you cover each side and the inside of the box top. Measure the paper so it’s large enough to fit around the outside of each of your containers. Cut it to fit. If you’re covering something like a drinking cup, you might find it easier to cover with strips, as opposed to larger pieces of paper. Strips work better since the cup is curved. Glue your paper in place. Add stickers, if you like. Make … Read more

Roberta’s Homemade Holidays: Headband

FancyHeadband

Hey friends! Today I’m working hard to finish two headbands for my cousins. I’m hoping they like them, because they definitely took me awhile to make! Want to make some yourself? Check out the instructions! What you need: Plastic headband, ribbon, craft glue, felt flower or brooch   What you do: Glue one end of the ribbon to one side of the headband. When the glue is dry, wrap the headband entirely. Tuck the end of the ribbon out of the way and glue it in place. Let the glue dry. Glue on the flower or pin on the brooch.

Roberta’s Homemade Holidays: One Tired Bunny

Roberta1

Know what takes a bit longer than I thought it would? Making homemade gifts. So far, I’ve managed to do the following: Personalized bookmark for my grandpa. Tote bag for my cousin Emmy. And that’s it! Can you believe it?! Two gifts. I’m SO far behind. I’ve got a TON more to do.  I stayed up until 11:00 last night working on the tote bag. My mom found me at my desk, and I thought she was going to yell at me. Instead, she just said ‘go to bed, honey. You’re working too hard.’ Little does she know I still have her gift (and a million others) to make! Do you think I can get it all done in time?!

Roberta’s Homemade Holidays: Tote Bag

OK, so the bookmark is almost done (just a few more finishing touches) and I thought of another gift to make – this one is going to be for my cousin Emmy. Emmy is an artist, so she’s always lugging around sketchbooks and pencils and stuff. I’ve decided to make her a tote bag.  Here’s how!   What you need: Canvas tote bag, needle, thread, felt or fabric scraps, pencil, scissors What you do: Draw a design on the bag. You can make it as complicated or as simple as you like. Arrange your fabric scraps in the design; cut them as needed. Sew the fabric scraps onto the bag. If you like, add the recipient’s name in permanent marker.

Roberta’s Homemade Holidays: Bookmark

I thought of a really neat idea for my grandpa today – a homemade bookmark! My poppa loves to read, so this is perfect for him.  Want to make one for the bookworm on your list?   What you need:  Cardstock in two colors, embroidery thread in two colors, one-hole punch, ruler, scissors, craft glue   What you do: Cut out a rectangle that’s 8 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. Cut out another rectangle that’s 9 inches long and 2 inches wide. Mount the smaller rectangle on the larger one. When the glue is dry, punch a hole at the top of the rectangle. Take your embroidery thread and cut six pieces; three of each color. Each piece should be four inches long. Put your embroidery threads through the hole and tie a knot at the bottom of the threads. Decorate your bookmark to suit the recipient of the gift.

Roberta Rabbit: Thanksgiving is Saved!

HappyRoberta

Hey guys. Roberta again. OK, so know how I said I didn’t understand why my dad couldn’t be home for Thanksgiving? Well, I decided to ask him when he called last night! And this is what he said: since he’s in South Webkinz World now, and since he has meetings AFTER Thanksgiving, it doesn’t make sense to come all the way home just for one day. I guess I can kind of understand. After all, who wants to spend six hours on a plane, only to hop off for about eight hours, and then hop back on the plane for six more hours? That sounds like a lot of traveling. Even though I’m going to miss my dad a ton, he said we can have our own small Thanksgiving celebration when he gets back. I’m going to make pumpkin muffins instead of pumpkin pie…and mom said we can have carrot loaf! So that sounds pretty great. Maybe Thanksgiving isn’t ruined after all.

Roberta Rabbit: Not Looking Forward to Thanksgiving

Roberta

Hey guys. It’s Roberta rabbit here and boy am I having a rough day. What’s up? Glad you asked. My dad has gone traveling again. He’s a sales rabbit (for the Kinzville Washing Machine Company) and that means he’s on the road a lot. I really miss him when he’s gone, but at least he always tries to make it home for the holidays. This year, it looks like he might be missing Thanksgiving. Can you believe it? My entire family (including all of my cousins, aunts, uncles, great-aunts, great-uncles and family friends) get together at my grandparents’ house. But not my dad. I don’t understand why he can’t skip the trip – or come home early! Everyone else gets a holiday. It’s not fair. Thanksgiving is kind of ruined for me this year.

Roberta’s Craft

Know what I love? Big earrings! Probably because my ears are…somewhat…prominent. So. Big earrings! I LOVE making jewelry, so here’s how to make some pretty dangly earrings for yourself (or a friend). What you need:Beads, thread, needle, earring backing (either pierced or clip on), square of cardstock   What you do: Put the thread through the needle. Choose which beads you’d like to use. I had this whole container of multi-colored beads. I did one rainbow pair and one blue-ish pair. Make a small knot at the end of the thread and string the beads onto the thread. You can make your earrings as dangly as you like! Tie the thread to your earring backing. Snip off any extra thread. Display your earrings on a piece of cardstock with your company’s name on it!

Roberta’s Cupcakes

Roberta'sCupcakes

For my cupcake contest entry I’m using my old standby recipe that I used for the bake sale in September. These cupcakes are my favorite! What you need: -          One package yellow cake mix -          Eggs/Oil/Milk (as per cake mix instructions) -          One package brownie mix -          Eggs/Oil/Milk (see above!) -          Small tube yellow icing -          Small tube red icing -          Small tube green gel icing -          Sesame seeds -          An adult assistant to help you with this recipe What you do: Have your adult assistant help you make yellow cupcakes according to directions on package. Have your adult assistant help you make brownies according to direction on package. Bake in 9×13” pan so that brownies are not too thick. Use a drinking glass approximately the same size as your cupcakes to cut out 12 circles from your brownies. These are your ‘hamburger patties’. Cut your cupcakes in half horizontally. These are your ‘hamburger buns’. On the bottom half of each cupcake, place a brownie patty. Using yellow, red and green icing, top the brownie patty with ‘mustard, ketchup and relish’. Set the cupcake tops on top of the brownie patties and … Read more

Roberta’s Costume Dilemma

RobertaPirate

By Roberta Rabbit Okay, can you help me out? I am stuck. I have to figure out what to be for Halloween – it’s only ten days away! – and I still don’t have a clue.             I had been thinking of being a mermaid, but I’m kind of worried that with Sera around in the Adventure Park, any other mermaid would pale in comparison.               So I thought about being a pirate, but what if Laurabeard decides to go out as a pirate? I mean, her brother is Dogbeard. He can probably give her loads of cool stuff for a pirate costume. How could I compete with a real pirate?             I saw this cute Turkey costume, but I’m not sure the Gravy Boat Hat really suits me.             I found this wild Werewolf costume but will any of my friends even recognize me? Does that even matter? I AM pretty scary in this get up, aren’t I?                 Then I saw this cool witch costume. It’s wicked huh? But I’m … Read more
