Field Trip #1 – The Great Canyon

Welcome to Kinzville Academy’s first field trip of the school year! Today I’m taking you all on a trip to the Great Canyon! The Great Canyon was formed over millions of years by erosion. Erosion can be caused by wind, ice, or gravity, but in this case it occurs when a river winds its way through the rocks, wearing down the surface and carrying the debris away with it. You can see the Countryside Creek that flows through the middle of the Great Canyon leading to a beautiful Pool Retreat in one corner.

Erosion can also form caverns and rock formations. Two Great Canyon Arches by the river make a recognizable landmark that will help us find our way through the canyon without getting lost in its depths. And look at that large Rocky Trail Cave on the right – maybe we will have time to explore it!

The rocks of the Great Canyon were formed by volcanic activity. The origins of the canyon may be found in the bubbling Lava Waterfall tucked into one corner of the canyon valley. Lava flowing beneath the surface of the canyon floor heats the water in the Volcanic Spa, situated in the center of the Great Canyon. The Volcanic Spa will be the perfect place for our pets to relax at the end of a long day of learning.

The dry climate of the Great Canyon means there is very little vegetation, but it does make it an ideal environment for cacti to grow. A cactus can survive long droughts because it stores water in its thick, fleshy stem. Check out the large Cactus Cottage growing just outside the Rocky Trail Cave. But be careful – rather than leaves, cacti have prickly spines! And of course, there is plenty of wildlife in the Great Canyon – can you spot the coyote?

Looks like some visitors have set up a small camp using the Secret Treehouse Tent. And can you spot any evidence of early civilizations visiting the Great Canyon? If you look closely you’ll see a Buffalo Cave Painting on some of the rocks! As a souvenir of your field trip, here is a code for your very own Buffalo Cave Painting. You can enter this code in the Code Shop.

I hope you enjoyed your trip to the Great Canyon! We’ll see you again in a few days for our next field trip. And remember – you will be tested on what you learned on our field trips so pay attention!

Hey everybody! That was a fantastic field trip! It makes me want to go to the Grand Canyon now more than ever! Just so I’m clear, the field trips are not once a day through Sept. 7, right? We’ll get a new one every few days? I wonder where we’re going next? They could be like Ms. Frizzle on the Magic School Bus and take us to outer space, and then to the bottom of the ocean! Please, Sophie! Tell me you’ve borrowed Ms. Frizzle’s bus!

The “Great Canyon” sounds like a knockoff of the Grand Canyon X’D

The GLASIARS pushed and formed great valleys. They also FORMED the GREAT LAKES !!

Flying in an air plane over the Great lakes I was above the CLOUDS in a rain storm and saw a ROUND RAINBOW it is also called a GLORY !! I have photos of them also. The sun above the clouds reflected on the moisture in the clouds. So a rainbow could be seen . TO PHOTOGRAPH this I took SUNGLASSES and HELD them in front of my CAMERA like a FILTER and it WORKED !! I have maybe 20 photos and pilots see them quite often.

Very nice field trip! I just bought the canyon walls and floors at the BOGO event last week and have been busy rummaging through my storage rooms for different items. I’ve really been enjoying the recent new activities lately. :-)
