Alex Tiger: Not a Fan of Halloween

Uh hi, it’s Alex Tiger. I’m feeling kind of overwhelmed. We’ve been talking an awful lot about Halloween at school and outside of school. In fact, it seems to be about all anyone can talk about right now. It’s just, well, I’m kind of embarrassed to admit this but… well, I don’t really like Halloween.

I like the candy part – that’s about the only part that makes it worth it. But I don’t like dressing up and I don’t like it when other people dress up in scary costumes. What’s so fun about being scared? I hate being scared. And when you go out on Halloween night, there are all these creepy looking costumes and you can’t tell who anybody is.

And the worst part – even worse than the costumes – is all the frightening decorations. There are skulls and ghosts and bats and creepy crawlies all over the place. And some of those Jack-o-lanterns have terrifying faces. I don’t see why people have to make them look so nasty. I don’t mind some of the funny ones.

I just don’t understand what is so great about this holiday. Why would anyone WANT to be scared? Can someone please explain it to me? I’m really not looking forward to it but I can’t say anything to my friends. I’m sure they’re just going to think I’m a big baby.

Alex, I am sometimes a little scared when it comes to halloween. My best tips for you are to tell your friends and maybe you can even go with your friends. I was very scared one halloween I remember. Then when I heard I was going to go with my best friend all the fright and worries went away! -Heartbeam¤

Hi Alex! I am with you. I like the fun part of Halloween – the smiling, friendly pumpkins, the corn stalks and orange and yellow and white streamers and candy corn, but not the scary part. I like making my own fun costume (I love the idea of being milk and cookies with my sister! – a big round cookie out of poster board, and a milk carton from a box we decorate.) As for the scary part, a friend of mine helped me to focus on how fake it all is: Blood? That is just ketchup or makeup. Spider web? That is fiber that is unwoven and arranged creatively? Something else? I ask myself how they did the fake. And yes, I still get frightened. But I try to laugh and say, “Good one. Wonder how that was done.” Everyone is different, and that is okay. Tell your friends. If they are really your friends (and I think yours are), they will understand and stand with you. Good luck!
