Plumpy: The trouble with best friends

Dear Plumpy,

Sara and I have been best friends since kindergarten. We see each other every single day and she’s pretty much like my sister. Or she WAS, until Natalie moved in. Natalie is Sara’s new neighbor – and now it seems like she’s her BFF too! Ever since Natalie arrived, Sara has been hanging out with her more and more. Last week, Sara and I were going to go to a movie – and she brought NATALIE along with her! I miss my best friend and I want her back. How do I get rid of Natalie?

Dear TOO,

I’ve got some news you probably won’t want to hear – you can’t get rid of Natalie – nor should you try. You didn’t say anything about Natalie being mean or snobby or anything like that, so I’m going to assume she’s a nice girl. If you trust Sara’s judgment (and you should, she’s your best friend), she probably saw a good person in Natalie and decided to befriend her. Why not give Natalie a chance? You might find that you have a lot in common with her, too. You might just make yourself another good friend.

If you ever want to do something with Sara (and Sara only), be polite and ask Sara if she could just come by herself – tell her it’s best friend time and you just want to hang out with her. If Sara is as awesome as you say, she’ll definitely understand.

One more thing: Natalie isn’t taking your place. She’s her own person and will have her own friendship with Sara, and that doesn’t change YOUR friendship with Sara. As you and Sara get older, you’re going to meet more and more friends – and that’s good! You can always keep in touch with each other and stay friends forever – while also having other pals to hang out with.

Good luck!

Love,

Plumpy
