Science Camp Experiment: Invisible Ink

Dear Mom,

You know what’s weird about the counselors here? They encourage us to pass secret notes during lab!  It’s not like we’re sneaking around though. It’s part of an experiment. We made invisible ink this week and we have been sending each other secret messages ever since! Sometimes the counselors even send us messages too!

It’s really easy making invisible ink. Here’s how you do it:

What you need:

-          2 tablespoons lemon juice

-          ½ teaspoon water

-          Q tip

-          Paper

-          Lamp

-          An adult assistant

What you do:

Mix the lemon juice and the water in a small cup. Dip the Q tip into the lemon mixture and use it to write your message on the paper. Let the lemon juice dry and the message should disappear.

In order to read your message, have an adult assistant help you hold it close to a light bulb, until the heat from the light bulb turns the lemon juice brown.

Remember these instructions, mom, because the next letter you get from me might LOOK blank, but hold it up to a light and you’ll get a surprise!

Miss you!

Love

Alex

This is so cool!!! I love invisible ink! This is a great idea, I will do it now if I have the stuff! Thanks Alex! >^..^< Meow! Stealthy :-)

I’ve made this before. It’s actually really really cool. Did you know you could also use onion juice, not only lemon juice? You can write something super secret, and NO ONE can read it! Isn’t that cool? ♥

That sounds really cool! I’ve heard of invisible ink before, but I never knew how to make it, or where it comes from. Now that I do, I can send secret notes to my BFF and when the teacher takes the paper (she usually does) she won’t be able to read it out loud in front of the class! LOL this’ll be so much fun!!! ~CC~

@CC — LOL! I don’t send messages during class. Last time I did, the teacher caught us and took the paper away and READ IT IN FRONT OF THE CLASS. It was mega embarrassing! Good thing it was only plans we made, and nothing personal! I’m never sending messages during class again! Not even with invisible ink! ~§~Rainbow Kitty~§~

Alex you are so cute!! We used to use baking soda mixed with water for our invisible ink. It works the same way. We’ve even used the heat from our fireplace to bring up the message. You have to be very careful to do that. We use tongs to hold the paper on the glass front of the fireplace and only under adult supervision.

I’ll give it a shot. In who framed roger Rabbit, the guy with the will used invisible ink and it appeared in roger’s love letter!

This is really cool Alex! I have a UV (Ultra Violet) pen, and when you write with it, the words are “invisible.” But then, when you take the other end of the pen, which has a UV light attached, you can see the “invisible” writing crisp and clear. I bought one of these for RW, my friend, and to this day, we still exchange letters like this. Not when it’s expressibly forbidden, of course. ;-) It’s strange that the teachers want them to pass on notes. Well, yeah, it IS a science camp, and the ink is science-y. BTW- It’s 4 days until my B-day! ~§ugªr☾☼♏εէ☄☄☄

I know about this, but I never actually made it before. I’d really like to try though, now that I have a proper recipe! ~Phoenix Wind~
