Friendship Focus: Compromise

By Alex Tiger

Wow, we’ve been talking a lot lately about what makes a good friend which has got me thinking about how important it is for friends to compromise. There was one time when forgetting that almost cost us a trip to Camp ‘Kinz.

We wanted to put on a show to raise the money we needed to go to camp. The problem was – we couldn’t decide what type of show. Some of us wanted to do a magic show, some of us wanted to put on a concert and some of us wanted to perform a play. We got so caught up in what we each wanted to do that instead of trying a way to satisfy everybody, we all tried to do our own thing – and that satisfied nobody. It was a disaster. Thank goodness we finally realized that we were much stronger together than we were apart.

When friends disagree it can be hard to see things from the other person’s point of view. It’s important to listen to your friends and consider their feelings. There doesn’t always have to be a right way and a wrong way of doing things. Sometimes when you put your heads together, there can be a way to resolve the situation that works for everybody. You just have to be willing to shift your position a bit.

So next time you and your friends can’t agree on something, try to find a compromise that is acceptable to everybody. Because what’s better – giving up a little to make your friends happy, or giving up nothing and being left with no friends? I know what I’d choose!

I like compromising. Every time me and my friends can’t agree on something, we compromise. I like that because we get to do a little bit of what everybody wants to do.
