Dacey’s Surprise
You guys will never, ever believe what’s happened: Dacey called me after school tonight. This is what she said: Cowabelle, answer your door. It’s cold out here. So I did. And she was standing right there, on my doorstep! I started crying, I was so happy to see her. She hugged me and said she was sorry for not emailing or calling me lately. She said the reason was because she wanted to surprise me and she was worried that if she spoke to me, she would give away the surprise. And guess what the surprise is? Tickets to the Tropical Island! And not just for me – but for ALL of my friends, the ‘Kinz! And Dacey! She’s filming a scene in her new movie there this weekend, and she said she thought it would be absolutely perfect if we all went together. I can’t believe it!
Warm Fuzzies
Valentine’s Day is coming up and Millie needed something cute to give to her friends in kindergarten. After going through our art box, we figured out how to make some adorable warm fuzzies! You can make some of your own – they’re really easy! What you need: Pompoms, sticky-backed felt, craft glue, wiggle eyes, pipe cleaner (cut into thirds), strips of paper, black marker What you do: Stick the pipe cleaner piece through your pompom. Cut out a heart shape from your sticky-backed felt. Leave the paper on the sticky part. Glue the pompom to the fuzzy part of the heart. The sticker part should be facing downwards. Glue the wiggle eyes onto your pompom. On the strip of paper, write a Valentine’s message. Glue the paper to your fuzzy’s ‘hands’ (the pipe cleaner). When all the glue is dry, give your warm fuzzy to a friend. They can stick it on a desk or paper (or anywhere, really) by peeling the sticker paper off the sticky part of the felt.
Roberta’s Valentine: Sweet Pencils
This is my latest addition to the treat bags I’m making my class. They are going to LOVE these! What you need: pencils, ribbon, cardstock, one-hole punch, thin ribbon, beads What you do: For each pencil, cut a piece of ribbon about six inches long. Tie the ribbon around the top of the pencil (right below the eraser part). Make sure it’s secure (tie a knot). On one end of the ribbon, string a few beads. Tie a knot to keep them in place. Cut out hearts from the cardstock (one per pencil). On each heart, write “You’re all write, Valentine!” Punch one hole in each heart. On the other end of the ribbon, thread on the cardstock heart. Add beads to the bottom of the ribbon and tie a knot to keep it all in place.
Roberta’s Craft: Wrapped Valentine Candy Bars
I’m going to take a page out of my friend Alex Tiger’s crafty book and make up some delicious Valentine’s Day Candy Bars. These are super-easy to make, and totally fun to give (and get!). What you need:Miniature chocolate bars (or, if you’re feeling REALLY generous, full-sized ones), construction paper, glue stick, scissors, glitter or stickers What you do: Create a wrapper for each candy bar. You can do this by measuring the bar and cutting paper that will fit around it. Decorate that paper with different colored hearts or a label. Try using colors that look good together – and are ones that you’d see on Valentine’s Day. Using your glue stick, attach the label or hearts. Add stickers or glitter to your wrapper. Write on any messages that you’d like to share. Wrap the wrapper around the chocolate bar and secure it with glue. Give one out to all your friends this Valentine’s Day.
Roberta’s Valentine: Sweet Butterfly
Roberta here with another fun Valentine’s Day craft! The big day is less than a month away, so I’m getting SUPER excited. Today’s craft is very easy – but totally cute! What you need: Wrapped sticks of gum (one per friend), construction paper, heart stickers, stick-on wiggle eyes (or stickers you can use for eyes), markers What you do: 1. Cut out two hearts from the construction paper. Stick them on your wrapped piece of gum, securing them in place with stickers. 2. Add stick-on wiggle eyes or other stickers as eyes. 3. Decorate the wings with markers and stickers. Write your friend’s name on the back of the wing. 4. Pass these out to your friends on Valentine’s Day – they’ll LOVE them!
Dacey Bryn, Where Are YOU?
Have you ever gotten to the point in a friendship where you realize that maybe, just maybe, it’s not going very well? I’m at that point with Dacey. I called her again today (that’s the fifth time in two days) and she just isn’t answering her phone. About two hours after I called, she sent me this text message: “C – call you sometime. Stop calling. Very busy! -D” I don’t even know what to say about that! I’m so sad. I thought she was my friend – my true friend. Sure, we don’t see each other very much, but up until recently she always sent me emails and we chatted on the phone a couple times each week. But now? Now I don’t even get the courtesy of her answering my phone calls! Now the emails are short and not very friendly at all! It seems to have started when she began filming her latest movie. Maybe she’s just too big a star to be friends with boring old Cowabelle. I tried talking to Roberta, but she told me to chill out and focus on my other friends for now. … Read more
Millie’s Snow Pig
My friend Molly’s little sister, Millie, wanted to appear in the Newz, so she decided to call me on the phone this morning. She said she had “breaking news” and that if I wanted to be a good reporter I should come over to her place. So I did. And guess what I saw? A cute little snow pig with pink cheeks! Millie made this ice sculpture and then used a plant misting bottle with water colored red with food coloring to add the pink cheeks! She just sprayed on the red water and voila – adorable! I’m not entirely sure this is ‘newsworthy,’ but it definitely is cute!
Salley: Detention Day 4
I can’t believe that Purr-Cilla! She came to detention tonight five minutes late, and then said to Ms. Cowoline “I think I’m going to be sick, my stomach hurts so much.” She DID look a bit pale, but it was hard to say if it was because of sickness or makeup! No matter, Ms. Cowoline looked really worried and told her to go home and feel better. Me? I got to wash all the blackboards in the school! This is where things got interesting. When I was in the grade seven classroom, I looked out the window and saw a whole bunch of kids playing in the school yard. Including Purr-Cilla. She was sliding down the hill and giggling and laughing and she seemed to be feeling absolutely, 100% fine. I threw my washing rag into the bucket of water and stomped down to Ms. Cowoline’s office. I told her what I saw, and Ms. Cowoline looked REALLY angry. She looked out the back door of the school and saw Purr-Cilla for herself. Then she did something strange. She said “Salley, you can go home. And don’t worry about detention tomorrow night.” So I … Read more

Salley’s Valentine’s Party Problem
I’m having a bit of a problem. See, Valentine’s Day is coming up and Stoogles is convinced that we should have a Valentine’s party. Which would be fine, if we were going to have it in the forest at his house. But NO! He wants to have it in town, at my house. Which wouldn’t be a problem if my mom was going to be home and able to chaperone. But she won’t be! She has a late meeting at work that night. I told Stoogles that we can’t have a party at my house without my mom there, but he said we’ll be really careful and only invite our closest friends. He asked if Mom would object to the ‘Kinz coming over. I said no, and he said, “What about the ‘Kinz and a few of their closest friends?” I said probably not, but I’m really worried about what he means by ‘closest friends.’ I keep trying to convince him to do it at his house, but he said his family wouldn’t appreciate the noise in the house, and it’s too cold out for an outside party. How do I convince him … Read more
