Salley Cat: Excited for Earth Day!

Dear Diary, I think I can safely say that no matter what happens tomorrow, we’ve worked REALLY hard to make it the best Earth Day ever! My friends and I have been so busy all day today. We organized all the gloves and bags for the clean up tomorrow, called to make sure the restaurants were still going to be able to donate the food (they are) and baked a bunch of cookies as an extra ‘thank you’ to everyone who has helped and donated. As I was brushing my teeth, my mom came into the bathroom and said how proud she was of me. She said that what I’ve done is huge and sets a good example for others. That made me feel so good about this! I know that Earth Day is going to be a huge success. Now I just need to get a few hours of sleep so I can be ready for tomorrow!   Love, Salley

Green Tip 3 from Salley: Recycling

Hey Everyone! It’s Salley again with another green tip. Today I want to talk to you about recycling. If you’ve already done your part to reduce (use less), reuse (use something more than once), the next best thing to do is recycle it. That means the item will get made into something else. If you have a recycling program in your town, you probably put all of your recyclables out by the curb and they get picked up and taken to a recycling plant.  There, the can be remade into different things. Glass can be recycled an infinite number of times! The important thing to know is what can and cannot be recycled. Each town has different rules, but generally you can recycle cardboard and glass (and usually plastic drinking bottles). Find out your local rules and make sure to recycle as much as you can!

Salley: Starting to Panic

Oh no! It’s Salley. I am really stressing about this Earth Day Clean Up I have planned. I don’t think it’s going to be nearly as successful as I thought. I really wanted to ask all the businesses for donations of garbage bags and work gloves, but I barely had time to go around to half the businesses in town! And I wanted to gather up a lot more volunteers, but I ran out of time so I only managed to visit a couple of neighborhoods to ask for help. I am going to have to make do with just a few volunteers. Right about now I kind of wish I could be as carefree as the rest of my friends. Today I seemed to see all of them at one point just hanging out around town. Stoogles and Sparky clearly have plenty of free time because I saw both of them going into the Tournament Arena and then the Arcade right afterward. Must be nice! Cowabelle and Roberta were just chatting with people on the corner. They were showing them some piece of paper or something. Who knows what that’s all about? And then Molly and Polly prance out … Read more

Salley’s Feeling Overwhelmed

Oh wow. It’s Roberta. Remember back at Christmas when I decided to make all my presents and it got to be a little overwhelming? Well, I stopped by to see Salley today and boy, did I ever recognize that crazed look in her eye! I know she thinks that because she has been president of school council she can handle all this responsibility, but she has just taken on way too much. She wouldn’t let us help her organize her clean up event and now she has got a million things to do and Earth Day is just around the corner! She has been going around the town telling everyone about the event and taking down names of volunteers, she had to meet with the Earth Day committee to coordinate their events, she wants to give an expensive reward to every single volunteer and she has been trying to hit every business in town to ask for donations. Oh, Salley, Salley, Salley.  I wish she would just realize that getting some of us to take some of the duties off of her shoulders doesn’t make her efforts any less valid. I’d better talk to the rest of the ‘Kinz, don’t … Read more

Green Tip 1 from Salley: Reducing

Taking care of the environment is SO important. One of the easiest things to do is to reduce the amount you waste. For instance, carry your lunch to school in reusable plastic containers. You’ll instantly reduce the amount of stuff you throw out each day!   What other reducing tips do you have, friends?

Stoogles Birthday

It’s Salley. Stoogles party is going really well and everyone is having so much fun, but there is something that’s kind of bothering me. There is a TON of food here. Googles really do know how to throw a party. The problem is that they have plastic plates, cups and cutlery. Do you have any idea how bad all that stuff is for the environment? It practically never decomposes. If they HAD to go with disposable plates and stuff (which I really wish they didn’t) couldn’t they have chosen biodegradable ones that would break down eventually? And straws! We don’t need straws! Not only that, but there are so many of us all dancing around and eating and drinking that this stuff is getting knocked all over the ground and danced on and crushed. Everywhere I look around this party it seems like there’s litter! And there is way too much food here for all of us too! So I asked Stoogles what was going to happen to all of the leftover food and he was like “Oh, that? I guess we’ll just chuck it.” Chuck it? What a waste! And they have these colored lights up everywhere even though … Read more

Stoogles’ Birthday: Coming Up Fast

Hi! It’s Salley. Wow. Is Stoogles ever excited about his birthday, or what? Googles love parties – that’s for sure! Everybody has been talking about the party and shopping for gifts for him. I know Cowabelle and Roberta were thinking of going in together to get him a new skateboard and they were going to custom paint it. Polly said she saw a cool shirt in the Big City and she was going to see if they have something similar in the KinzStyle Outlet. Alex wants to get him a science book and Sparky said he hasn’t decided yet because there is just too much to choose from in his Uncle Arte’s Curio Shop. He better hurry up! I think that Stoogles is going to love all of those gifts, but I’m having a really hard time deciding what I want to get for him. He is my best friend after all. The thing is I really want to be environmentally responsible this year. I want to get Stoogles an environmentally friendly gift. I was thinking that I could plant a tree for him in the Caring Valley, but I kind of want to give him something he could have … Read more

The ‘Kinz offer to help

Salley again. When I told the ‘Kinz about my Earth Day idea to clean up the town, they were all really sweet and offered to help out with organizing all the volunteers and stuff. The thing is – I really just want this to be MY thing. I just know that I will feel better about it if I know that I do this myself. Then I will really know that I am making a big difference. I know it’s going to be a lot of work, but then I will feel all the better about it. You just wait – Earth Day is going to be awesome. Everyone in Kinzville is going to be thanking me for how great the town looks afterward.

Salley decides on an Earth Day project

I think all the Earth Day activities planned around Kinzville are really cool events, but I kind of had my own idea and I thought to myself, this is what the school presidency has been preparing me for. I am going to take on my very own Earth Day project. I know that when my friends and I ride our bikes around Kinzville I get really down whenever I see litter lying around, so I am going to organize volunteers to go around Kinzville and pick up trash. I think that’s something that will have real impact. My mom thinks that I am taking on too much and if I want to organize a town-wide clean up I am going to need help, but I really want to plan this myself. Imagine my feeling of accomplishment when I look around the town and know that I am the one responsible for getting all that trash cleaned up.

Salley brainstorms ideas

I have been thinking a lot about Earth Day and what I can do. There are so many activities going on that day. I know I want to participate, but I just want to make sure that whatever I do really has an impact, you know? There is a 5 mile walk being organized in the Big City (but that is kind of far from here) as well as tree planting in the Caring Valley. The W Shop and Ms. Birdy’s Adoption Center are teaming up to give out cloth diapers to new parents and there is also going to be a recycling event at Kinzville Park. These are all really cool events that will help raise awareness about taking care of our planet. I’m just not sure exactly how I want to contribute. Whatever I do I want it to be really noticeable and make a real difference to Kinzville.

Salley and Stoogles, BFFs

Dear Diary, My best friend is, as you might have guessed, a little…odd…sometimes. He’s a great guy, don’t get me wrong, but I never know where he gets his crazy ideas from. Case in point? His birthday. Stoogles wants to throw an ‘awesome dance party’ with ‘everyone in the school’. Really? REALLY? That sounds like a lot of work…and maybe not such a great idea. Like, what happens if Purr-Cilla shows up? If he invites the whole school, he’s going to have to invite her…and that’ll ruin everything. Also, how is he going to have enough food for everyone? And where is he going to have the party? He keeps saying “in the forest”…but what if it rains? Maybe I should just stay out of this and let him do whatever he wants.  He seems super-excited…so maybe it’ll all work out? Ah, Stoogles. It’s never dull being your BFF!   -          Salley

Salley is starting to feel the responsibility of something greater

Hi there. It’s me, Salley. I’ve really liked being school council president this year. Even the stuff with Purr-cilla hasn’t been that bad because it feels really good to accomplish something, and sometimes the harder you have to work to do something, the better it feels when it actually gets done. So in a weird kind of way, Purr-cilla has actually helped me feel better about my job as president. The thing is, even though being president of the school council is awesome, I started thinking – there is so much going on in the world.  I just love being able to help out the way I’ve helped make things happen at the school this year. Maybe I could take some of the energy that I put into being president and apply it to some bigger problems. So this year, I am going to see what I can do to get involved in Earth Day. I think that is a really important event and I would really like to try and make a difference. I feel like – if it feels that good getting things done for the students at … Read more

What NOT to Talk About at a ‘Kinz Meeting

Well, today’s ‘Kinz meeting was definitely…interesting. I brought up the topic of the Easter Parade. BIG mistake! Apparently three of our club members are planning on trying out. Molly, Cowabelle and Stoogles all think they’re going to be the stars of the parade (Stoogles wants to break with tradition and create an Easter King).  Molly says she should be the queen because she has a great hollering voice (this is true). Cowabelle thinks her acting abilities will win her the crown. And Stoogles figures that the royalty should be able to dance well. Which he does. So the auditions should be interesting tomorrow! I’m hoping someone totally different gets to be the queen (or king). Otherwise, I think there could be problems between those three…

Salley Strikes Back

Okay, now Stoogles is going to learn what it is to get a mouthful of something gross when he’s not expecting it! I was so mad when he gave me that sour gum this morning, but I have a deliciously wicked plan to get back at him. Stoogles loves my salsa. With a bowl full of tortilla chips, it’s one of his favorite snacks. What he doesn’t know is that I made an extra-special batch of salsa today, especially for him. That’s because I put in six times the amount of hot peppers that it calls for. Oh, I cannot wait to see his face when he takes a bite of this!

Salley’s Party

Ugh. This is not exactly my idea of a great Valentine’s Day. I mean, it’s actually pretty fun, hanging out and watching movies with my friends, but I’ve been really jumpy. I keep worrying that any minute my house is going to be bombarded with unwelcome party guests. Cowabelle said to relax and enjoy myself. It’s getting kind of late and she said that if anyone were going to turn up they would be here by now. I’m sure she’s probably right but I can’t help feeling a bit nervous still. I mean, my mom would freak if everybody from school was here when she got home. What was that??? Oh no – it’s the doorbell! I’ve got to go see who it is. I feel a bit sick. It’s all starting…   Hey, I’m back! So guess who that was? It was not a horde of rowdy party goers if that’s what you’re thinking (because I was totally thinking that!) It was Stoogles. He just came over to stay that he realized that he crossed the line and he wanted to apologize. Isn’t that sweet? He even brought a giant heart shaped … Read more
